Indiana Fever's Myisha Hines-Allen made a block so good that it even had former rival turned teammate Sophie Cunningham talking about it.
In the final minutes of the fourth quarter, with the Fever having an 88-87 lead against the Chicago Sky, Hines-Allen made a monstrous chase-down block on Jacy Sheldon, who was unsuccessful with her layup.
Cunningham was definitely a fan of the block that mightily helped the Fever's comeback in the fourth quarter, as she took to X to admire Hines-Allen's efforts.
"Oh my baby Jesus. Just nasty" Cunningham wrote.
Cunningham and Hines-Allen have not always exactly been the best of friends in the WNBA.
In a 2022 game between the Phoenix Mercury (where Cunningham was on at the time) and the Washington Mystics (where MHA was playing), Cunningham went up for a three-point shot while MHA was closing out on her.
Cunningham made the shot, but Hines-Allen deliberately stepped over her, which Cunningham took exception to. What followed was both players screaming at each other, with next to no distance between them, until they had to get separated.
However, they have left that moment in the past since becoming teammates. Cunningham even expressed her excitement at MHA's arrival in Indiana.
"Myisha Hines-Allen, who is a monster — so glad we’re on the same team now, and I think she is too," Cunningham said while welcoming the new additions to the squad this season.
With a hard-fought 114-106 overtime victory at home against the Sky, the Fever's record moves to 7-5 for the season.
But while Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston took things in control, scoring 30+ points each and making WNBA history, Cunningham did not even play the game due to an elbow injury.
Sophie Cunningham Injury Update
The game against the Sky is the first contest she has had to miss after appearing in 11 consecutive games. Before the game, head coach Stephanie White told reporters that her elbow had been sore for a while.
The Fever tactician added that the decision to rule her out was about being “extremely cautious and thinking about the big picture.”
The 29-year-old has been a reliable backup guard for the Fever, averaging 8.7 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game. She was also part of the headlines recently, thanks to her key pass leading to a Caitlin Clark game-winning three-pointer against the Washington Mystics.
While the Fever are taking Cunningham's injury one day at a time, Chloe Peterson of the Indianapolis Star has reported that the veteran guard will not be out for too long.
“From what we were told, the Fever don’t expect Cunningham’s injury to be a long term thing. Just soreness that they’re being overly cautious about, as they have been before,” Peterson wrote.
With the Fever extending their record to 7-5 for the season and having the chance of defending their Commissioner's Cup title, they would hope for Cunningham's return to the bench sooner rather than later.
So, when do you think Sophie Cunningham is returning to the lineup? Let us know in the comments.
