It was a bittersweet moment for New York Liberty center Jonquel Jones at the United Center in Chicago after she won the All-Star Game MVP award, as her emotions got the better of her after a trying weekend that she almost did not even attend.
Jones' aunt recently died, and the memorial service was Saturday. Jones said her family supported her in participating in All-Star Weekend, as she dedicated her trophy win in the WNBA's 30th anniversary to her alongside all the women who came before her.
"I think with tonight, and with my aunt, I think this one holds a special place in my heart now..." Jones said.
I think this trophy is special because it represents not just me, but all the women that came before us. We're celebrating our 30th year anniversary in the league now, and it just means a lot to push this league forward." She added in an interview with ESPN.

Jones became the first Liberty player and also the first international player to win the All-Star MVP.
Jones' steady improvement is certainly visible to all, as she previously won Most Improved and Sixth Player of the Year. She's also one of nine players to ever dunk in the WNBA All-Star Game.
To reach this level in the league requires a certain level of hard work and dedication to the craft, and Jones can thank her childhood for where she is right now.
Jonquel Jones is Living Her Childhood Dream
When Jones considers what she kept constant to reach this level of distinction as a WNBA player, she thinks back to her childhood.
“This is everything that I dreamed about when I was a kid," Jones said.
"I told my parents when I was 5 years old that I was going to be a professional athlete. The plan never changed. Even when it looked murky, even when I didn't know how I was going to get it done and when I was on the phone calls with random coaches in the Bahamas, hoping that somebody would give me a chance."
Jones added that whatever she had put in perspective, she is living that dream to the fullest.
The All-Star MVP is just another accolade Jones has added to her trophy cabinet, as the 15-12 New York Liberty will need the best of Jones to qualify for the playoffs and make a significant championship run.
So, do you think Jonquel Jones will be the difference-maker for the Liberty ahead of the season? Let us know in the comments.
