Tennis star Jessica Pegula of America has played 19 matches in a span of little over a month, from Washington DC to the US Open. This schedule has cost the Singapore Open its top-seeded player.
Jessica Pegula pulled out of the WTA 500 Tournament before its September 21st start date via social media.

She wrote, "I'm really disappointed to have to withdraw from Singapore. After a long and physically demanding few weeks at the US Open, I'm just not quite ready to get back on court and compete at the level I expect from myself."
This is quite consistent with her recent performance record. Pegula made it to the Washington DC final, round of 16 in the Canadian Open, Cincinnati Open final, and US Open semifinal without giving herself much rest before coming to Singapore.
Pegula's absence from the tournament is not the only one in this tournament, too.
Pegula joins world No. 13 Diana Shnaider and world No. 15 Sorana Cirstea as the third seeded player who has withdrawn from the tournament. The number of withdrawals has risen to seven players.
Other withdrawals include Ekaterina Alexandrova, Anastasia Potapova, Ann Li, and Clara Tauson, thus elevating Mirra Andreeva to the top seed and Amanda Anisimova to second place among other adjustments made by the organizers amidst the withdrawals.
That much movement is going to raise some serious questions beyond the scope of this tournament alone.
Jessica Pegula's Withdrawal Adds to a Rough US Open Stretch
Pegula's departure from the Singapore Open was not shocking to many people who had followed her performance in the US Open semifinal against world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, where she was beaten 7-5, 6-2.
She seemed listless during that game, much less energetic than usual, although some believed it was a matter of her opponent playing a higher level than a problem of hers.
Adding to the mystery was the fact that Pegula wore several inexplicable bandages while playing at the US Open tournament. These included bandages around her leg during the quarterfinals and her quadriceps during the semifinals.
Even with the tough schedule, Pegula is still well-positioned in the battle for the WTA Finals. Currently, she is ranked third in the world, just one spot ahead of Coco Gauff, an American player ranked fourth.
