Just hours after veteran journalist Jason Whitlock sent shockwaves through the WNBA community by tweeting that the Indiana Fever were planning to ship Caitlin Clark to the Los Angeles Sparks, he doubled down on that take.
Whitlock posted the tweet on June 4 and, just hours later, pointed to NHL legend Wayne Gretzky as an example. He referenced Gretzky's blockbuster move from the Edmonton Oilers to the Los Angeles Kings in 1988. This trade helped bring hockey into the mainstream U.S. market
"The NHL moved Wayne Gretzky out of Canada to Los Angeles because it made sense for the entire league," Whitlock said. "If you think the WNBA won't move Caitlin Clark to LA, you're not paying attention. Lin Dunn, Stephanie White, etc. are following instructions. Caitlin is, too."
Whitlock also reposted a video from the Fever's official account that showcased Clark hitting a sidestep three-pointer. He argued that the video had only 140k views at the time, but it could have had more if it were from a year ago. For context, the video has over three million views right now.
Whitlock also pointed out that the Fever's head coach, Stephanie White, has a different strategic philosophy that Clark does not fit into. He reposted Darrelynn Dunn's explanation tweet to point out the same.
With this repost, he indicated that not only will the trade be a great move for the league's growth, but it will also be great for Clark, allowing her to fit into a system made for her.
But amid all the rumors and buzz surrounding the two-time All-Star and the Fever, how are they doing so far in the league?
Caitlin Clark And The Fever Finding Back The Groove
It has certainly not been a jolly start for the Fever, with a 5-5 record. While the 2024 first pick is in decent form, averaging 18.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 8.2 assists per game, the expectations are much higher for her.
Also, the Fever have been tremendous on offense, averaging 89.2 points per game. The Fever currently ranks third in this offensive stat but struggles defensively, allowing an average of 86.6 points per game, placing them 11th in that category.
Also, the Fever have been weak in the paint, giving away 42.2 points per game, ranking 13th in the league in this specific stat.
The Fever lost to the New York Liberty 83-75. They will need to return to form against the Washington Mystics.
The Mystics are themselves on the struggling end of the league, with a 4-5 record. The Fever will play the Mystics on Monday, June 8.
