Serena Williams dominated her rivalry with Caroline Wozniacki, holding a 10-1 H2H advantage. But off the court, the two have remained close friends for years. So if anyone would know whether ReRe is planning a comeback after four years away, it might be Wozniacki.
Caroline Wozniacki recently sat down with the Nothing Major Show. There, she addressed the rumors about Serena Williams potentially returning to tennis after her 2022 retirement.
When asked whether she would like to see Serena Williams return to tennis, Caroline Wozniacki gave a straightforward answer. "I think as a fan, you always want the greatest of all time on the women's side, obviously, to play. I think anyone would love to see her back. [But] now, it just gets harder and harder."
The former world ranked then explained why she feels that way.
"When you get older and you haven't played for a few years, I think it can be a little hard to come back. If she chooses to come back, I wish her all the best."
Even so, the comeback rumors have only grown stronger. Williams has not played since 2022, but she re-entered the ITIA drug-testing pool last October. Then, in March, Alycia Parks shared a video of the two practicing together, which fueled even more speculation.
Despite all the rumors, Wozniacki was careful not to reveal anything. "I cannot confirm nor deny whether she's coming back or not."
Naturally, fans continue searching for clues. The latest wave of speculation began when sports journalist Jon Wertheim claimed on the Served Podcast with Andy Roddick that Williams had submitted wildcard requests for tournaments during the upcoming grass-court season.
At the time of the interview, Wozniacki said she did not know whether a comeback was actually happening. Now that the Queen's return is official, though, her longtime friend is likely thrilled.
Serena Williams Officially Announces Tennis Comeback
Serena Williams is officially coming back to tennis. The 23-time Grand Slam champion will return to the court in London at the WTA 500 HSBC Championships, 196 weeks after her last match at the 2022 US Open.
The news became official on Monday when Williams was awarded a doubles wildcard into the tournament. The six-time Wimbledon doubles champion also released a statement explaining why this event felt like the right place for her return.
“Queen’s Club feels like the perfect place to begin this next chapter. Grass has given me some of the most meaningful moments of my career, and I’m excited to be back competing on one of the sport’s most iconic stages."
Shortly afterward, Williams shared a video on social media titled, “Good news travels fast.”
For her return though, Serena Williams received one of the tournament's two available wildcards. According to The Athletic, she is expected to partner 19-year-old Canadian Victoria Mboko in doubles. However, the WTA's official announcement stated that her partner will "be announced in due course."
