Is Naomi Osaka ready to build her next empire? Tennis star reveals ambitious luxury venture

Naomi Osaka is expanding her business footprint by launching her own independent luxury accessories brand. She officially unveiled it at Uncharted's Fame to Fortune Summit in the Hamptons on Friday.

The move is different from many of Osaka's earlier business partnerships.

She already has her hands in skincare, media, investments, and major global endorsements. But this time, she is not just putting her name behind another company's product. She wants to help create the product herself.

"Being a really good tennis player has given me a lot of amazing opportunities to invest and also just to surround myself with some really great people and I feel like that's gotten me to this point where I want to create my own thing," Osaka told Fortune executive editorial director Diane Brady during the fireside chat, per Variety.

Osaka showed a prototype of one of her handbags at the summit. She presented it with business partner Mike Cherman, the founder of Los Angeles streetwear brand Chinatown Market.

The event gave Osaka a chance to speak directly with potential investors about the idea. And the 4x Wimbledon winner called the luxury venture her 'biggest dream' outside of tennis.

"It's something that I want to pour all my energy into because I believe in it too with all my heart," she added during the same conversation.

For years, Osaka has used fashion as another way to show her personality.

Her Nike outfits have often become part of the story around her matches. She has worked with designers such as Hana Yagi and Robert Wun, turning her walk onto the court into something much bigger than a normal tennis entrance.

Now, she is flipping that script. Instead of wearing other designers' creations, she wants to help create some of the pieces herself.

Osaka's tennis career built the platform for her business empire

In 2018, Osaka became a household name almost overnight, upsetting Serena Williams in the U.S. Open final to become the first Japanese player to win a Grand Slam singles title.

The run continued into January 2019, when she won the Australian Open and became the first Asian player, man or woman, to reach world No. 1.

That on-court success opened the doors to massive commercial success. In 2019, Nike signed Osaka to a long-term apparel deal. Louis Vuitton and TAG Heuer both brought her on as a global ambassador in January 2021.

Mastercard and BodyArmor followed, with Osaka reportedly taking an equity stake in the sports drink rather than an endorsement fee — a decision that paid off when Coca-Cola bought full control of BodyArmor.

Tatler Asia recently estimated her broader economic value at close to $120 million, with her core personal net worth estimated between $45 million and $60 million.

While she has earned more than $25 million in career prize money on the WTA Tour, the vast majority of her wealth comes from corporate partnerships and equity ownership in businesses she helped create.

That portfolio includes KINLÒ, a suncare and skincare brand that she co-founded with A-Frame Brands.

She also co-founded Hana Kuma, a multimedia production company created in partnership with LeBron James’ SpringHill Company, which produces culturally impactful, Emmy-nominated stories.

With her new independent luxury leather accessories line, Naomi Osaka is bringing all of her experiences together.
