Jason Whitlock has never been shy in expressing his feelings towards Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever. After back-to-back losses against Angel Reese's Atlanta Dream, Whitlock made a bold statement regarding the Fever's team chemistry.
The Fever was on top of things in the first half against the Dream, as Clark scored 13 points in 10 minutes. But that was the last of the Fever's dominance we saw throughout the game, as the Dream took control with some exceptional defensive performance.
Whitlock sounded off on this sentiment on X, believing that the Fever is not as constructive as the Dream and that, despite their star players, the team looks average at best.
"Hot shooting in the first half masked all the Fever problems. When the shooting cooled, Indiana's lack of defense and Caitlin's turnover explosion exposed how much better the Dream are constructed. Indiana's pieces don't fit. Average team." Whitlock wrote.
Whitlock would not be wrong in his assessment regarding Clark's turnovers. While she started off the game with no turnovers in the first quarter, that number quickly jumped to an ugly 7-7 assist-to-turnover ratio by the end.
Clark was still the highest scorer for the Fever with 26 points, 7 assists, and 3 rebounds. However, her offensive impact will continue to have a defined ceiling until she takes care of the turnover issues.
The uplifting thing is that Clark knows about this issue, and she reacted to the team's 113-96 loss to Angel Reese and the Atlanta Dream on Saturday.
Caitlin Clark Opens Up About Her Turnover Woes
With seven more turnovers against the swarming Dream defense on Saturday, Clark now has accrued a league-worst 72 turnovers in 15 games.
That brings her total to 206, making her the first player in WNBA history to have two seasons with 200 or more turnovers in their career.
Following the loss, she acknowledged this issue and admitted that the team needs to do better in transitional play and in maintaining the lead.
"I think we have to take care of the ball better and that starts with me, so I think just focusing on that," Clark told reporters after the game.
"What we did well in the first half was play in transition, spray, find open people. And then, really hard to do that when all we do is foul and they score. We didn't play in transition at all in the second half because of that." She added.
The Fever are now 9-7 for the season. Once touted as the favorites to reach the playoffs, things are looking on the bleaker side for Stephanie White's team.
The Fever will now look to extend their win record to double digits in the next game against the Phoenix Mercury on Monday night. White and Clark must find a way to reduce the number of turnovers with more focus on the team's overall defensive setup.
