With the WNBA trade deadline just two days away, Los Angeles Sparks' Kelsey Plum is the biggest name expected to be moved.
However, Plum is not letting the speculation get to her, as she spoke with the media on Thursday and addressed her injury status and potential of being traded before Sunday's deadline.
"The thing about professional sports is it's business," Plum told reporters. "At the end of the day, people have to do what's best for them, and I respect that. And I'm not taking anything personal. For me, I'm going to be where my feet are."
Plum has not participated on the hardwood since June 21 due to a lower leg injury. But she revealed her intention to return to the court on Sunday when the Sparks take on the Portland Fire on the road.
"I play for the Sparks, so on Sunday, I'm going to suit up and I'm going to give them whatever minute restriction, fill-the-blank-in minutes of hell, coming off the bench," Plum said following her first official team practice Thursday. "I'm actually really excited about it."
Currently though, the Sparks are not doing so well without Plum's talents. They are on a six-game losing streak and have gone 2-9 in this stretch without Plum.
And that makes sense, as Plum was one of the league's best players earlier in the season, averaging career-highs of 23.9 points and 6.4 assists per game in 12 appearances. She was also one of the favorites for this season's MVP honors.
Regardless, there are murmurs that Plum might not commit past the remainder of this season, sources told ESPN.
The first team that pops up as a potential landing spot for the 31-year-old is the Golden State Valkyries. However, that will be easier said than done.
Golden State Valkyries Not Expected to Make a Move for Kelsey Plum
According to a source from ESPN, the Valkyries are reluctant to part with multiple "key contributors" to their roster whom the Sparks would want to make the deal work.
This comes from the fact that the Valkyries are on a fine run of form this season, and many analysts have put them as favorites to reach deep into the playoffs.
The source also said that the Valkyries are confident in what their current crop of players can accomplish and do not want to rush into making a big move that could disrupt their continuity. Instead, making a move for Plum or another big-name signing could be put off until free agency.
For now, the consensus is that Plum will remain with the Sparks through the trade deadline, but there is a real possibility that the Sparks could lose her in free agency.
