Chelsea Gray has been teammates with A'ja Wilson since 2021, yet the point guard still admits to being surprised by her brilliance every game day.
Following the Las Vegas Aces' 101-91 victory against the Seattle Storm, Gray spoke about her feelings on what it's like sharing the court with the four-time MVP.
"She’s amazing, man… I’m in awe a lot of the time. She keeps getting better, and so that’s a scary thought." Gray said, via an X post from Underdog WNBA.
Gray's comments come after Wilson showed no mercy to the Storm, finishing with a near triple-double of 34 points, 12 rebounds, and nine assists on top of three blocks.
But the stat that made headlines came after Wilson grabbed an offensive rebound with just over five minutes to play to secure a double-double, and she sank a jumper from the free-throw line at the other end.
This made the Aces star the fastest player in WNBA history to record 6,000 career points, doing so in just 278 games.
Wilson became the 19th player in league history to reach this milestone and also surpassed the previous record of 6,000 career points in 291 games, held by WNBA legend Diana Taurasi.
Wilson joins DeWanna Bonner, Nneka Ogwumike, Jewell Loyd, Breanna Stewart, and Brittney Griner as the only active players to have 6,000 or more points in their career, and the Aces star was quite grateful to have achieved this feat.
“It’s a blessing. I give it all to God. I’m able to show up to work every single day with phenomenal women that make me want to do what I want to do,” Wilson said. “It’s been an incredible journey and ride. Obviously, we’re not done and I have a lot more to do.”
Gray was not the only one to have acknowledged Wilson, as her comments were right in line with what head coach Becky Hammon has come to expect from the decorated center.
Becky Hammon All Praise for A'ja Wilson
Before going into any of the statistics or the plethora of accolades of Wilson, Hammon first decided to appreciate Wilson's grateful approach to life, and how driven she is.
But even Hammon has lost track of how many records Wilson possesses, as according to her, there is and will be no stopping how far she can reach.
“It seems like she’s breaking a record every day. So you start to lose track of them. Nothing surprises me with the woman... She keeps getting better and better,” Hammon said. “So far as records and how many she’s going to break, I have no idea. A lot. A lot when everything’s said and done.”
When Hammon arrived at the Aces in 2021, Wilson had already earned her first MVP honors the year before.
Hammon still remembers how limited Wilson's attributes were as compared to now, where she is frequently stated to be the most versatile player in the league.
“There’s really not an offensive area that she can’t do,” Hammon said. “Her expansion of her offensive floor game has just made her unguardable. I’m not ever going to put her in a box, I know that.”
With the win against the Storm, the Aces extend their record to 8-3 for the season and 3-0 in the Commissioner's Cup. They will look to get a chokehold on the in-season tournament with a win against the Portland Fire on Thursday as Wilson continues to look for records to break.
So, do you think A'ja Wilson will retire as the greatest women's basketball player of all time? Let us know in the comments.
