Anna Kalinskaya dealt with a physical crisis on the clay courts of Roland Garros when her body began shutting down. What started as a promising third-round match turned into a fight against extreme heat.
Kalinskaya defeated Camila Osorio 6-3, 0-6, 6-2 in the 3rd round of Roland Garros. Following the match, she opened up about the issues she faced during the post-match press conference. Kalinskaya said, “Yeah, I started to feel very hot and started to feel my energy was going down in the end of the first set. I didn't finish the first set on my serve. I had a couple of set points. Luckily, I could break her to finish it.”
She continued, “I took a break, going to the bathroom, but it didn't help too much. I started to feel worse and worse. At 4-0, unfortunately, I had to see the doctor and call the physio. It took me some time to recover, but in the 3rd set I started to feel better and more cool. I had a lot of ice drinks and, little by little, I started to recover and start to play my tennis again."

Her energy drop was noticeable as the opening set reached its critical stages. She failed to close the set on her own serve despite having clear opportunities. However, she found just enough strength to break Osorio and take the early lead.
In the Roland Garros tournament, temperatures have reached around 33°C. The clay makes it more demanding in these weather conditions. When combined with extreme heat, it leads to dehydration and raises core body temperatures.
During the medical timeout, she received cooling treatments and hydration. She was monitored by the medical staff while resting in her chair. She struggled to speak comfortably and looked physically drained.
These physical struggles caused her 0-6 collapse in the second set. This was more than a routine timeout. It almost threatened her chances of advancing in the tournament and raised serious health concerns.
Consuming ice drinks and taking proper recovery measures helped her regain energy. She then made brilliant tactical changes in the 3rd set to survive the conditions. Kalinskaya shortened the baseline rallies to avoid extended running.
She played more aggressively and started taking the ball earlier on the rise. She also attacked the net frequently to end points faster.
These adjustments helped her conserve her remaining energy while regaining total control of the match. She completed a physical recovery to win the final set 6-2. Dealing with such situations also explains the tough Kalinskaya mindset this season.
A breakthrough performance by Anna Kalinkskaya amid Paris Heat
This is Kalinskaya's best-ever result at Roland Garros. Her previous best finish was only the 2nd round. She had already won straight-set matches over Lois Boisson and Alina Korneeva before facing Osorio.
Kalinskaya relied on her tour experience and recovery routines to deal with this challenge. She adapted her game instead of trying to outlast long baseline rallies. She used her aggressive playstyle to finish points early.
Dominating a deciding set after losing a set 6-0 needs mental and tactical clarity. She turned a physical disadvantage into a tactical edge against a very capable opponent.
She has now officially advanced to the Round of 16 for the first time in Paris. In her post-match interview, she talked about resting in the air conditioning and enjoying some shopping on her off day.
