Caitlin Clark made her intentions clear during her end-of-season exit interview, and the message was about more than just a contract.
Speaking one week after the Indiana Fever's first-round playoff exit against the Las Vegas Aces, the three-time All-Star addressed her eligibility for an Exceptional Performance on Initial Contract (EPIC) extension under the WNBA's collective bargaining agreement. The provision allows certain high-performing players on rookie deals to renegotiate and sign a multi-year extension earlier than traditional free agency timelines, potentially accelerating their path to maximum salaries.
"No matter what, I'm going to be [with the Fever]," Clark said as posted on X. "My focus is on winning. I certainly know what I deserve and what I'm worth, but at the same time, sometimes you have to make sacrifices."

As posted by Underdog WNBA on X, Clark emphasized that she hasn't started formal discussions with the front office about the extension and has given the matter little thought so far, noting she has spent recent days playing golf. She framed any decision as secondary to roster construction and the team's ability to compete for titles.
"Not saying I'm gonna sign it or not sign it, I think it's just kinda figuring out the way we need to construct our roster. No matter what, I'm gonna be here. I just want to do what's best for the team and make sure we have the opportunity to win championships. That's my main goal."
The comments follow a standout individual 2026 season in which Clark averaged 22.3 points and 8.3 assists while helping the Fever reach the playoffs. She has been central to the league's rising profile, consistently driving television ratings, attendance, and merchandise sales, while elevating teammates and forming one of the league's highest-scoring backcourts alongside Kelsey Mitchell.
Caitlin Clark stands by Kelsey Mitchell amid free-agency questions
Clark used her Indiana Fever exit interview to strongly support her backcourt partner, addressing both the personal challenges Kelsey Mitchell has faced and the uncertainty surrounding her free agency.
Mitchell had previously spoken about the emotional toll of playing for the Fever, including hateful private messages and criticism simply for being on Clark's team. Clark said those comments upset her as a teammate.
"I obviously saw Kelsey's comments, and I think as her teammate it makes you upset because you care about your teammates so much and you don't want any of them to go through something like that," she said in the same interview, as published by On SI.
Clark also directly rejected racist or discriminatory rhetoric tied to her name.
"As far as people that have used me to demonstrate racist rhetoric, or hate, or discrimination, that's not something I stand for. It's never been something I stood for... That's not who I am. That's not what I'm about."
Do you think Clark should take the full EPIC extension, or restructure it to give the Fever more flexibility to build around her?
