How Sophie Cunningham Unexpectedly Became the Internet's Newest Meme

A 22-second stare and a finger point were all it took for Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham to take over the internet for good.

During a tense exchange in the Fever's game against the Phoenix Mercury, Cunningham unexpectedly became an overnight meme sensation with brands, fans, and even public figures joining the joke.

Cunningham can credit Caitlin Clark for this, who late in the fourth quarter exchanged words with former Fever teammate DeWanna Bonner. As players stepped in to separate them, Cunningham found herself face-to-face with Bonner.

Bonner pointed at Cunningham, who calmly did the same for roughly 22 seconds without saying a word, creating a viral clip that spread all across social media.

While her reaction spread like wildfire, Cunningham downplayed the incident with Bonner postgame, saying there was no lingering issue between the players.

"It's okay. I think sometimes that's just part of the game," Cunningham said. "We kept our composure... we finished the game, and that's what we have to continue doing."

In a Fever team consisting of Clark, who regularly makes headlines through her performances on the court and intense rivalries, it was a simple pointing gesture by Cunningham that caught mainstream attention. Well, that's how the internet works.

Ironically, it was a game where Cunningham scored only 2 points on 0-of-5 shooting from the field in 26 minutes off the bench.

The 29-year-old would not care enough, regardless, as she has never shied away from voicing her opinions.

Sophie Cunningham is Not Afraid of Being Controversial

Watch any episode of the Show Me Something podcast, and you will understand that Cunningham is not shy of speaking her mind.

Cunningham got into controversy last year for taking some pretty direct shots at the WNBA's officiating, and also for publicly criticizing Bonner’s decision to quit on the team.

But the enforcer has never once backed down from a fight. She once infamously fouled Jacy Sheldon after she appeared to get away with a dirty move on Clark in a 2025 Fever-Sun game.

Following her hard foul on Sheldon, Cunningham actually received several high-profile endorsements from security company Ring, Arby’s, Adidas, and her lucrative podcast deal.

One can only imagine who reaches out to Cunningham after her meme has gone platinum on social media.
