23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams has shared her thoughts on her "bestie" Grigor Dimitrov's tough year amid a major injury blow. The two were seen hugging and talking to each other, reuniting at Wimbledon ahead of Williams first singles match since 2022.
Williams was seen talking about her friendship with Dimitrov, where she also discussed the tough injury that Dimitrov went through last year, when he got injured during his match against then World No. 1, Jannik Sinner.
"I always call Grigor my bestie. It was so good to see him," Williams said in a video segment shared by Wimbledon on X.
"He gets my crazy, and I get his crazy, and he's way crazier than I am. He is so good-hearted and good-natured. It was really tough to see that last year he's had a tough year, just dealing with that injury. But, you just got to continue to fight and continue to come back."
Dimitrov tore his right pectoral while playing against Sinner in last year's Wimbledon fourth round. Before the injury, he was leading 6-3, 7-5, 2-2, having won two sets.
Dimitrov retired from the match, with Sinner qualifying for the next round. He also missed the 2025 US Open with an injury to his chest muscle.
While Williams had an emotional take on Dimitrov's injury, she also said they hadn't met in almost a year and that she was happy to see him at Wimbledon.
While Dimitrov will be looking for redemption from last year, Williams is on her own separate journey at Wimbledon.
Serena Williams Returns For Her First Singles Match Since The 2022 US Open
Williams played her last singles match against the World No. 94 Ajla Tomljanović 7-5, 6-7, 6-1 in the third round of the 2022 US Open. She will now play her first singles match against the Australian Maya Joint in her Wimbledon opener.
Ahead of Wimbledon, Williams spoke to the press on Sunday and announced her decision to accept a wild card entry into the tournament's singles.
"I thought not every day Wimbledon holds a wild card for someone," Williams said according to WTAtennis.com. "I can name probably like a handful of people. I happened to be one of those people. I thought I should really take this opportunity. Who knows if I'll ever make it here again? This could be it."
Williams has won the Wimbledon singles title seven times. Not only will she be part of the singles, but she will also play the doubles alongside her sister, Venus Williams, with whom she has won six Wimbledon titles and 14 Grand Slams in total.
The two sisters will face the unseeded duo of Camila Osorio and Solana Sierra in the first round of Wimbledon.
