"Had a lot of missed layups": Arike Ogunbowale Weighs In On Paige Bueckers’ Playmaking Display

It was yet another tremendous display by Paige Bueckers during the Dallas Wings' win against the Los Angeles Sparks by 104-96. Guard Arike Ogunbowale suggested that Bueckers could have broken the record for most assists in a single game, if it was not for her.

Bueckers tied Ogunbowale's most assists for the franchise in one game, by dishing out 14 assists against the Sparks. In her post-game interview, Ogunbowale was adamant that her teammate's night could have been historic.

"I smoked her assists on purpose; no, I'm just kidding," Ogunbowale said sarcastically. "Obviously Paige is one of one, and she could have got it. We had a lot of missed layups from her passes, but she'll break it at some point, soon."

While Ogunbowale focused on the close chances, she remained certain the record would inevitably be broken by Bueckers. Bueckers, on the other hand, expressed gratitude to share the milestone with the veteran guard.

"In the locker room, I was going down the whole entire line of teammates, letting them know that they smoked one for me," Bueckers said while smiling.

"But I think it was all planned to be able to share that with Arike. Assists mean just giving to your teammate, so that's really the best accomplishment you can get."

Bueckers was impeccable against the Sparks, not only recording 14 assists but also scoring 18 points.

Ogunbowale was on fire as well, scoring a season-high 30 points, along with dishing six assists and having six rebounds. She also scored six three-pointers in the game.

Veteran forward Jessica Shepard was among the stars of the game as well, scoring 22 points, making five assists, and having 15 rebounds. The complete performance from the team, earned the praise from their head coach.

Coach Jose Fernandez Commends Team Chemistry

The Wings' head coach, Jose Fernandez, was pleased with both the team and Bueckers' performance. He reflected on the performance, saying that he believed in his team.

"I don't think anybody in the league or probably around the country thought we'd be 7-3 right now," Fernandez said. "(But) the locker room did, and I did, and our staff did. We continue to learn from the wins as much as we learned from those three losses (in which) we had leads in the fourth quarter."

This is the Wings' best record in the first 10 games since the franchise moved to Dallas, while previously being called the Tulsa Shock. The coach further praised Bueckers.

"She has a good feel on pick-and-roll coverages, in the middle of the floor, in the slot, on the side," Fernandez said. "Paige is going to get everybody's best defender night in and night out, and now she's playing primarily at the point guard spot. She just makes really, really good reads."

The Wings are set to play their toughest game yet against the Minnesota Lynx on Tuesday, June 9. The Lynx are at the top of the league standings, with an 8-2 record.
