"GOAT is back": Serena Williams Fans React as Tennis Legend Picks Another Doubles Partner Post Mboko's Injury

In their first competitive match together, Serena Williams and Victoria Mboko produced one of the more impressive outcomes of the Queen's Club grass swing, making it to the doubles quarterfinals. But that collaboration won't last until the following week.

According to The Times, Williams has confirmed that she will compete at the Berlin Ladies Open alongside world No. 10 Karolina Muchova. The change was made after Mboko's injury prevented the pairing, which had just begun to establish itself on grass, from continuing.

Victoria Mboko suffered a left knee injury during her second-round singles match against Karolina Pliskova after she slipped on the grass courts at the HSBC Championships.

When compared to what Williams and Mboko had already created, the announcement carries significant weight. On the Andy Murray Arena, the two defeated the seeded Erin Routliffe and Nicole Melichar-Martinez 7-6, 6-2.

Williams' first competitive victory since 2022 occurred 1,375 days after her most recent tour appearance.

Fans were thrilled when the Berlin pairing was confirmed. Social media buzzed with excitement over the partner change, not concern, and the GOAT's return was a popular topic.

Serena Williams' Berlin Announcement Sends Fans into a Frenzy

People online had differing reactions to Williams and Muchova's partnership, with some celebrating the new duo and others offering sympathy to Mboko for her exit.

After winning her first match after 1,375 days alongside Mboko at Queen's, beating a seeded duo, a fan went wild, saying, "GOAT is back," and Williams' fans were shouting from the rooftops.

Another fan said, "This is going to be very interesting," and for very good reasons. Williams has destroyed the record books and boasts 23 Grand Slams, while Muchova has been on fire this 2026 season with a record of 24-7 and a WTA 1000 title to her name.

Another comment said, "We hope Mboko recovers quickly" after the Canadian pulled out, and they reached the quarterfinals at the Queen's after their first doubles match.

A user said, "What an incredible partnership this will be," and pointed to Muchova's top 10 status and adaptable game as perfect for Berlin grass with a returning Williams.

Another response, "Wow, what a team," encapsulated the general feeling surrounding a matchup that pairs one of the most inventive players in the WTA top 10 with a 23-time Grand Slam champion.

The answer made it clear that Williams' announcement in Berlin did little to dampen the growing excitement around her return.
