Former NBA champion calls out A'ja Wilson in a cryptic message

Stephen Jackson has aimed at A'ja Wilson, or at least that's how many fans are reading it. The former NBA champion posted a cryptic message about accountability in the WNBA without naming anyone, but the timing and wording had social media connecting the dots to the Aces star.

On October 1st, Jackson shared a video in which he publicly called out the WNBA announcers for not holding the players accountable when necessary.

"Well, how come these women announcers not holding these WNBA players accountable when they do something? That was foul. Like, everything can’t be correct," Jackson said in the video reshared by NBA Central on X.

The incident the 2003 NBA Champion was referring to in the video took place during Game 2 on September 30th. During the fourth quarter, with 4:10 on the clock, A’ja approached a fan sitting near the baseline in the second row and pointed and shouted toward him.

According to Wilson's explanation, she said that the fan stepped toward her and pointed after Sophie Cunningham was called for a foul.

Some viewers wondered if A'ja Wilson's reaction to the fan was warranted. The Prime Video announcers sided with her for the most part and did not push back on her response.

However, Stephen Jackson did not stop there; he further pointed out the difference between how WNBA and NBA players are covered during a game.

"They want to be treated like NBA players, but y’all don’t want to be accountable like NBA players," Jackson said in the video further. "They quick to jump on an NBA player when does something wrong, or say something foul, or do something in the media, y’all jump on them. Jump on the same WNBA players that are doing foul s***. You go both ways, right? Equality, right?"

Jackson never mentioned Wilson by name, and he didn't specify which moment he meant. Even so, his argument that WNBA players should face the same scrutiny as their NBA counterparts has added to the debate over how the league is covered

A’ja Wilson gives her side of the fan interaction

Wilson addressed the exchange in her postgame press conference, and she did not soften her stance. She said the fan's actions, not his words, were the problem.

"If I see a man come at me, taking steps toward me and pointing at me, I don't give a damn what you said. I don't give a damn how you said it, the tone; that is unacceptable," Wilson said during the post-game interview, as reported by Underdog WNBA on X.

She went on to explain why she felt the exchange crossed a line.

"You don't know me to step toward me and point at me. I'm not for that s*** at all … That is unacceptable. How he gets back in the game because they said he didn't do anything; of course he did."

Her frustration extended to how the situation was handled afterward. According to Fever reporter Tony East, the fan was briefly removed before being let back in, then seen celebrating and high-fiving other fans.

For Wilson, the issue was never what the fan said, but that he crossed a line, and she made clear she believes the response to it fell short.
