Former ESPN host draws criticism for comments on Caitlin Clark’s historic performance

The former ESPN broadcaster dismissed one of Clark's best nights of the season by comparing it, unfavorably, to a game Clark wasn't in.

"Miss me with that stat padding 37 points, on the floor up 20 w/ a minute to go BS. The 32 points in just 26 minutes was WAY more impressive from the star on the playoff team from the Lone Star State," Brunson posted in a story for a Seattle-Dallas game in which Clark didn't play, as per Bobby Burack of OutKick.

Clark had just dropped 37 points on 13-of-24 shooting, including 8-of-12 from three, plus 10 assists in a 113-90 win over Chicago.

Brunson's takeaway was that the blowout made the number meaningless, and that Paige Bueckers' 32 points elsewhere meant more, as per Bobby Burack of OutKick.

Brunson has defended DiJonai Carrington's ejection for a flagrant foul on Sophie Cunningham as well.

Per her, Cunningham was the one to be the one tossed instead, and sharing posts alleging "reverse DEI" benefits some players.

She's been blunt about where her loyalties lie, posting on Threads that she's "team @dijonai all day every day."

Burack notes Brunson eventually deleted her stat-padding post, though not out of regret. She claimed it drew hateful replies.

Brunson's opinion seems to shift depending on the player

According to the same Bobby Burack report, this week, Clark logged her fifth career 30-point, 10-assist game, more than the rest of WNBA history combined, since every other player has managed just four between them.

Brunson's response, per Burack, was to call it a small sample size, which doesn't square with a feat nobody else has repeated even once.

Compare that to how Brunson greeted Angel Reese setting a rebounding record last week during a blowout win, praising it without hesitation.

When fans pointed out the same competition-level argument she had used against Clark, Brunson said it didn't matter this time.

"So impressive @Reese10Angel just broke a record that has stood since May of 2003 when Chamique Holdsclaw hauled in 24 rips for her Mystics vs the Shock. Reese finished w/ 26 rebounds, 18 on the defensive glass. So TUFF. #WNBA," Brunson posted this week.

Whatever the reasoning behind it, the gap between how Brunson framed Clark's night and how she framed similar performances from other players is now part of the conversation.
