"Fix this": Fans rage as Dream fail to secure State Farm Arena for WNBA finals

A historic Finals run for Atlanta is running into a very practical problem: there's no room at the bigger venue.

Atlanta Dream fans expressed frustration after learning the team will host its 2026 WNBA Finals home games at the 3,500-seat Gateway Center Arena instead of the larger State Farm Arena. The Dream had hoped to move Games 3, 4, and a potential Game 6 of the championship series against the Golden State Valkyries to State Farm Arena, which seats more than 17,000. Those efforts fell short.

“The Dream hoped to play at State Farm Arena, which seats more than 17,000 people, but were unsuccessful as the arena is currently booked during Games 3, 4 and 6 for a concert and two Atlanta Hawks regular-season games,” per @ItsMeghanLHall.

According to a Yahoo post on X, the downtown venue is already booked for a concert and two Atlanta Hawks regular-season games on the relevant dates. As a result, the Dream will play their Finals home contests at Gateway Center Arena in College Park, their primary home venue this season.

The timing added to the frustration. Just days earlier, the Dream announced a multi-year agreement to make State Farm Arena their full-time home beginning in 2027, when the WNBA expands to a 50-game season.

The team had already used the larger venue for select regular-season and playoff games this year, drawing strong crowds. Missing out on it for the Finals left supporters questioning why contingency planning for a deep playoff run hadn't secured a bigger stage.

Fans are not happy with this for the WNBA finals

The news drew an angry response from Dream supporters, many of whom pointed to alternatives and to how Golden State's situation was handled.

Some fans offered practical suggestions, noting that Atlanta has major college venues within reach that could have hosted the games. One fan wrote:

"Come on WNBA. Both Georgia Tech (Atlanta) AND University of Georgia (Athens) have much bigger stadiums. Fix this."

Others focused on the contrast with the Valkyries, whose arena reportedly shifted a concert to make room for their Finals games.

"Doja Cat rescheduled hers for Golden State, but it's f***** up nobody would do the same for Atlanta," one fan said.

A fan took the arena size personally, arguing it undersells the city's stature and the national TV spotlight.

"ATL thinks it's a small city, what is 3,500 ppl gone do for a nationally televised game? This is embarrassing,"

A few reactions framed the situation as a lack of respect for the franchise.

"Wow, the WNBA hate is real and pathetic towards the Dream," one fan wrote.

Others repeated the Chase Center comparison, stressing the stakes of the series itself.

"Chase Center literally rescheduled concerts for the Valkyries games during playoffs. This is the WNBA FINALS ffs. This is OUTRAGEOUS."

Do you think the league should have stepped in to secure a larger venue for Atlanta's home Finals games?
