Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs just leveled the Western Conference Finals. Following a dominant 103-82 victory over Oklahoma City, Wembanyama warned that the battle for the NBA title is only getting harder.
In four games, Wemby has already had two legacy games at just 22 and is gradually becoming the leader of the group. In the postgame press conference, Wemby believes his team will only rest after clinching the coveted NBA title.
"We had never been in this kind of situation before. It was our first deficit in the playoff series, and we just responded. It was nothing amazing, it wasn't magic, we just did what we needed to do. And the series is far from over. We got 6 more wins before we can rest," Wembanyama said.
The Frenchman was once again the heart of both the Spurs' offense and defense, finishing with 33 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 blocked shots to lead the Spurs to a 103-82 win at home.
The highlight of the night definitely came at the final seconds of the first half, once again thanks to the 22-year-old. A swished 3-pointer from the midcourt stripe to close the first half brought maybe the loudest roars of his night.
Three OKC defenders were on the Frenchman before he swished the shot, which is just a single example of the physical demands of this series, which has certainly taken a toll on the players.
Spurs-Thunder was the perfect game for the Western Conference Finals, as Wemby has been a kryptonite to the reigning champions throughout the season.
And that is why Wemby believes the series to be "far from over", as the Spurs have beaten the Thunder six times out of nine opportunities this season.
But the Thunder's latest loss also sets a record they would not like to hear about anytime soon.
The Spurs Hold Thunder to Worst Performance in Four Years
Wemby and the Spurs put on a defensive masterclass, as the Thunder looked flat the whole game and felt out of rhythm on offense.
It also did not help as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who scored a team-high 19 points, did not have help as the likes of Jalen Williams and Ajay Mitchell were unavailable due to injury concerns.
According to ESPN, the Spurs held the Thunder to their worst offensive output since 2022 with just 82 points. ESPN also said that it was the first time the Thunder had been held under 90 points in a playoff game since Aug. 29, 2020, in the NBA bubble.
But SGA is not the kind of player to give up so soon, as he revealed his ideology postgame that the team learns more from losses than wins.
With the series now shifting back to Oklahoma for Game 5, the pressure and expectations are on the Thunder to gain a 3-2 lead and have one step into the NBA Finals in back-to-back seasons.
However, it remains to be seen how the Thunder would deal with their injured players on their home floor. OKC hosts the Spurs on May 26 at the Paycom Center.
