Fans spot Academy Award-winning star at Wings-Valkyries Playoffs Game 3

A high-stakes elimination game got an unexpected dose of Hollywood star power on Friday night.

George Lucas, the Academy Award-winning filmmaker and creator of Star Wars, was spotted in attendance at Chase Center for Game 3 of the first-round WNBA playoff series between the Dallas Wings and Golden State Valkyries.

SportsCenter captured the moment with a simple caption that immediately resonated.

"THE FORCE IS STRONG IN BALLHALLA. George Lucas is in attendance for Game 3 of Wings-Valkyries," SportsCenter posted on X.

The Valkyries, who call their home arena "Ballhalla," hosted the winner-take-all contest after a back-and-forth series. Golden State, the No. 2 seed, had taken Game 1 convincingly before the No. 7 Wings forced a decisive Game 3 with a dramatic overtime win in Game 2, powered by Arike Ogunbowale's playoff-record 45 points.

Game 3 delivered another tense battle, with the Valkyries rallying from a 16-point deficit to win 77-73 and advance to the semifinals, where they will face the defending champion Las Vegas Aces.

Lucas's presence added an unexpected layer of attention to an already high-stakes night. The Bay Area has long attracted high-profile figures from tech, entertainment, and sports, but seeing the creator of one of the most influential film franchises in history at a WNBA playoff game still felt rare.

Moreover, Lucas has longstanding Bay Area ties through Skywalker Ranch in Marin County and Lucasfilm’s headquarters in San Francisco’s Presidio.

Cameras caught him in the stands as the Valkyries completed their comeback, and the clip spread quickly across social media. Lucas's attendance offered a lighter, memorable detail amid the intensity of a true do-or-die playoff atmosphere.

And fans were thrilled about his appearance in the game.

Fans react to George Lucas at Game 3

Social media wasted no time turning the sighting of George Lucas into reactions. Fans treated the appearance of the Star Wars creator inside “Ballhalla” like the ultimate unexpected cameo.

One fan captured the absurdity of the moment perfectly.

“George Lucas at a WNBA game 3 is the crossover episode nobody wrote”

Another imagined the filmmaker already at work.

“Bro is drafting episode 10 based on this fourth quarter.”

Classic Force references appeared almost instantly. One fan simply declared the line most associated with Star Wars.

“The force is strong with this one.”

A few took a playful shot at the atmosphere, with one writing:

“Nothing says ‘defending champs’ quite like needing a Jedi in the building to keep the vibes under control.”

And the simplest reaction summed it up cleanly:

“The Force has arrived!”

Do you think moments like this reflect the WNBA's growing crossover appeal beyond traditional basketball audiences?
