UCLA women’s basketball announced Sunday that sophomore forward Lena Bilic will miss the entire 2026-27 season after suffering a torn ACL during practice. The injury deals an early blow to the defending national champions as they prepare to open the new campaign.
Bilic, a 6-foot-3 wing from Zagreb, Croatia, appeared in 33 games as a freshman during UCLA’s title-winning 2025-26 season. She averaged 3.0 points and 1.4 rebounds in 12.1 minutes per game, with three double-digit scoring outings.
Her most productive night came against Southern University, when she scored a season-high 14 points and grabbed six rebounds.

Journalist Ira Gorawara broke this news on her X account.
Head coach Cori Close expressed the program’s disappointment in a statement.
“We are devastated for Lena,” Close said. “She is such an important part of what we do here, and I know she’ll continue to be impactful for us through her recovery. We’ll be with Lena every step of the way, and she’s in great hands with the best medical staff in the country, so I know she will come out on the other side stronger and better.”
Bilic was one of the few key returners for a roster that lost multiple seniors to the WNBA draft following the national championship. She had been expected to take on a larger role this season, with the potential to start or contribute significant minutes as a versatile wing capable of playing either the two or three position.
Her absence forces the Bruins to lean more heavily on transfers and remaining returners as they begin the defense of their first national title.
Fans react to Bilic’s injury
The news of Lena Bilic's injury drew an outpouring of support from fans, with many focusing on encouragement rather than disappointment over the setback itself.
One fan directed his message straight to Bilic.
"If Lena is reading this, please focus on healing, and we will be looking forward to your return next year! Stay positive."
Another expressed simple, immediate disappointment at the news.
"Ugh, terrible news on Lena Bilic. Ugh."
Many comments reflected a sense of missed opportunity, with fans pointing to the timing of the injury right as she appeared poised for a breakout season.
"Here's to a speedy recovery. Such a shame. She was ready to take a leap this season."
Some reactions were brief but heartfelt, capturing the overall mood among supporters processing the setback.
"Devastating news," one comment read.
Others offered short, encouraging messages aimed at keeping spirits up during the recovery period.
"Oh, man. Stay strong."
Across the board, the reaction leaned supportive, with fans largely setting aside any frustration over what the injury might mean for the team and instead focusing on Bilic's health and eventual return.
Do you think Bilic will be back next season fully recovered?
