Fans push back after Jason Whitlock makes bold Caitlin Clark claim

Team USA maintains a veteran starting lineup so far in the FIBA World Cup 2026 and remains undefeated, with Caitlin Clark contributing off the bench.

While the team keeps winning and Clark continues to make an impact, many questioned that decision: why one of the most productive guards is not in the starting five.

Sports commentator Jason Whitlock argued that public frustration over Clark’s playing time misses the bigger picture.

"The Caitlin Clark Army wanted abandonment. They wanted the keys, a track meet pace, and a national team rebuilt as an Indiana Fever roadshow. What they got was a coach who kept her eyes on France and adjusted the furniture around a hole she did not create," Whitlock said.

In his view, head coach Kara Lawson is not benching Clark based on day-to-day performance.

Instead, he claims Lawson had to rebuild her game plan from scratch after A'ja Wilson withdrew from the roster right before the tournament began.

"So, if you are Kara Lawson and you have been married to a French Connection plan for months, what do you do when the queen walks off the board?" Whitlock asked.

Whitlock claimed Lawson spent months building a system designed specifically to defeat France, with Wilson on the floor. So, the departure forced Lawson to change her plans.

"Lawson is worried, right or wrong, that Caitlin's game gets hunted by Gabby Williams the same way it gets nudged off the schedule in San Francisco. She is worried, right or wrong, that Angel Reese's offensive aggressiveness turns into fouls, stalled possessions, and a night that blows up in America's face when the margin is one possession again," he explained.

France pushed Team USA to the brink in the 2024 Paris Olympics final before a 67-66 escape.

So, in Whitlock's telling, every group-stage decision, including keeping Clark on the bench behind Chelsea Gray and Jackie Young, is a dress rehearsal for that matchup.

Whitlock pointed specifically to French forward Gabby Williams, who also plays for the Golden State Valkyries.

Williams presents a technical roadblock for Clark. In their WNBA regular-season matchups, Clark has averaged 17 points and 7 assists across their meetings.

While Clark led Indiana to a 90-82 win over Golden State in May, she ran into trouble in their next two match-up in late May and mid-July. In those two games, Clark was held to a combined 29 points and 12 assists while Williams scored a combined 46 points for the Valkyries.

Fans fire back at Whitlock’s theory with the box score

The comment section hasn't accepted Whitlock’s 'The French Connection' theory.

"That is probably the dumbest take I’ve ever heard. Do you think Caitlin watches any of these videos or listens to anyone outside of basketball? Come on, JASON, you’re smarter than that; I would hope," said one fan.

Fans pointed to Chelsea Gray's numbers, the starter Clark comes off the bench for. Gray shot just 4 of 13 from the field and finished with three total assists across the first three games. Meanwhile,  Clark is Team USA's leading assist provider and had the best +/- mark on the roster at the same time period.

"Long winded an illogical. We understand that maturity takes time and experience. Clark’s makes her mistakes, but her replacement as a starter certainly makes her idiotic mistakes NOW TOO! She’s absolutely inferior to Clark, and their statistics on their own teams verify this fact," added another fan.

Another fan repeated the same sentiment.

"So the coach wants to play a style that doesn’t suit the best player on the team," the fan wrote.

Earlier this season, during debates surrounding the WNBA MVP race between Wilson and Clark, Whitlock had pointed to defensive plus-minus numbers to critique Clark’s game.

So, one fan sarcastically added, "You’re the one who hammered Caitlin’s +/- a month ago as evidence of her defense; now it’s annoying you.... Thanks for the high IQ analysis."

One fan refers to Whitlock's earlier arguments during the WNBA season, when he was vocal against Clark.

"You're posting this for clicks. People like you are the ones creating the problem. You know people will retaliate, which in turn gives you attention and clicks. Once again, CC remains the adult in this circus."

Fans noted that Whitlock has previously used sharp language to describe Clark during her rookie campaign, calling her a "whiner" and an "emotional train wreck."
