‘Excellent Play’: Magic Johnson Praises Sparks’ Clutch Win and Rising Star’s Dominance

With a third straight victory on the road, Los Angeles Sparks co-owner Magic Johnson could not help but appreciate his team's efforts while providing some additional encouragement to Cameron Brink.

In their latest away game, the Sparks won 92-87 against the Washington Mystics as Brink's excellent run of form continued with 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting, 2 rebounds, and an assist, all in just 17 minutes of action, which Johnson appreciated on X.

"My Los Angeles Sparks get their 3rd straight road victory tonight over the Washington Mystics 92-87! They were led by Erica Wheeler who scored 14 of her 21 points in the 4th quarter, Nneka Ogwumike finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds, Cameron Brink continued her excellent play with 16 points, and Dearica Hamby scored 14 points." Johnson wrote.

After a slow start to the season, Brink has been hooping lately. In seven games, she has lifted her averages to 10.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks.

This change comes after Sparks head coach Lynne Roberts had to answer early on in the season why Brink received a limited amount of minutes.

“We need Cam to produce. We need Cam to bring that defensive energy. She’s got to get out on the floor with some confidence and do what she’s capable of doing.”

This is the first season that Brink is expected to play in full after tearing her ACL in her rookie season. She returned for the final 19 games of the 2025 season off the bench, never exceeding 20 minutes a game.

But now, Brink is slowly finding her rhythm with the Sparks once again, as they take the momentum from road wins back to home.

The Los Angeles Sparks Hope to Continue Good Form

After overcoming the Mystics, the Sparks have moved above .500 this season. Their current record stands at 4-3, with Brink's fingerprints all over the ratio turning to the good side.

Brink told reporters at media day that while last year was spent focused on her knee, this year she just gets to “play.”

“I’m still super young, and I’m still making mistakes, and I may not be living up to my potential yet, but I definitely think I’m on the right path,” she said, teared up, noting that she’s had to fight her way back to feeling like herself.

The good news for Brink is that Roberts has now put her faith in the 2024 No.2 overall pick, and Brink's current run suggests it is only going to get better from here on out.

So, do you think that Cameron Brink can lead the Los Angeles Sparks to a playoff spot this season? Let us know in the comments.
