The British No. 1, Emma Raducanu, has been suffering from a string of injuries for a few months now. This has also raised concerns about whether she will be part of Wimbledon, starting Monday, June 29. But now, a confirmation has been given by her.
After Raducanu was seen practicing on June 24 with protective boots on, questions about her fitness began to be raised. But just 12 hours before her match against Croatia's Antonia Ružić, she has now written on social media about her availability for Wimbledon.
"I can't believe I'm saying this, but sadly, I've had to withdraw from Wimbledon," Raducanu said as per a post by Wimbledon on Instagram. "The niggle I've been managing has developed into a stress fracture, and I've been medically advised to stop pushing through."
The niggle she talked about was something she had been dealing with since competing in the HSBC Championships, where she reached the final of the tournament before losing to Croatia's Donna Vekić 6-0, 7-6 (8-6). This is the same reason why she was also seen wearin the protective boots on Wednesday.
"Playing at Wimbledon means everything to me, so this is really difficult to process. I look forward to seeing you when I'm back."
She also didn't practice on Thursday and Friday due to a shin problem, as reported by the BBC. Raducanu had an hour-long session on Saturday, wearing strapping around her lower right leg. But she later cut short her practice session with Russia's Anna Kalinskaya.
But this isn't the first time Raducanu has faced injury problems in her career.
Emma Raducanu Has Dealt With Multiple Injury Woes In Her Career
After winning her first Grand Slam tournament, the 2021 US Open at the age of just 19, Raducanu has undergone multiple ankle and wrist surgeries, halting her progress toward becoming one of the top players in the world.
In 2023, she also missed the French Open and Wimbledon due to ongoing surgeries on both wrists and her left ankle. If we talk about this year alone, she had been suffering from a viral illness that kept her out of three WTA 1000 events: the Miami, Madrid, and Rome Opens.
She stated to The Guardian in February about the virus she contracted during the Transylvania Open.
"I picked up like a virus, I think, at the start of the (Cluj) tournament. So I was dealing with that and the after-effects,” she said. “I had really long effects for the last three weeks. I’ve been trying to clear them."
Although reaching the final of the Queen's Club tournament, Raducanu was looking to be a strong contender for Wimbledon. But now, with this leg injury, Raducanu will miss the biggest Grand Slam tournament yet again.
