Elena Rybakina's 2026 U.S. Open victory was a career landmark, but it came at a real physical price. The world No. 1 will bring the trophy home to Kazakhstan for celebrations, but she will be sitting out for another tournament as she prioritizes recovery.

According to the Kazakhstan Tennis Federation, Rybakina is set to spend a week back home, visiting Astana and Almaty, running masterclasses for young players, meeting fans, and holding autograph sessions with the U.S. Open trophy in tow. 

That celebration, though, comes with a clear catch. Rybakina won't represent Kazakhstan at the Billie Jean King Cup Finals in Shenzhen, China, scheduled for September 22–27. Her coaching staff says she needs at least two weeks for treatment and recovery, which rules out playing in the event entirely.

As per the Kazakhstan Tennis Federation, as published by Kursiv. media, the issue traces back to an Achilles tendon problem that first surfaced at the WTA 1000 event in Cincinnati. It didn't go away by the time the U.S. Open started, forcing Rybakina to manage the pain with medication throughout the tournament while still competing at the highest level. Despite that, she made it through the full two-week major and walked away with the title, her third Grand Slam overall.

Achilles issues tend to be stubborn for tennis players, affecting push-off, court coverage, and confidence during long rallies. Every match she played risked making things worse, which is part of why her team ultimately decided to shut things down for the team event rather than push through another commitment.

Her team has made clear that full recovery now matters more than any short-term competitive appearance.

Who will the Kazakhstan team lean on in Rybakina’s absence?

For Kazakhstan, Rybakina's absence at the Billie Jean King Cup Finals is a real blow. As the country's biggest tennis star and a proven performer in team competition, her presence would have carried real weight against Spain in the quarterfinals on September 23.

Without their world No. 1, Kazakhstan loses its clearest singles difference-maker, putting far more pressure on the rest of the roster. Yulia Putintseva now steps in as the clear No. 1 singles option, a role she's earned through years as Kazakhstan's steadiest contributor alongside Rybakina. 

Beyond her, the team leans on Anna Danilina, primarily a doubles specialist, along with Zhibek Kulambayeva and Sonja Zhiyenbayeva, as per an X post by  @BJKCup. However, none of them currently match Rybakina's ranking or ability to consistently beat top-tier opponents in singles.

Rybakina’s absence doesn't eliminate Kazakhstan's chances outright, since team events often come down to momentum and doubles play, but it clearly lowers expectations against a solid Spanish side.
