“Easy to Take It for Granted”: Indiana Fever HC Reflects on Caitlin Clark’s Talent After Clutch Performance

It was an iconic moment at CareFirst Arena when two-time All-Star Caitlin Clark hit a buzzer-beater to help the Indiana Fever win against the Washington Mystics 78-76. Head coach Stephanie White was all praises for her star player.

Clark hit a 31-foot three-pointer with only 1.2 seconds remaining in the game, with the Fever clinching a win. White was keen on letting people know it wasn't easy what Clark did back there.

"When you have a player like her, it's very easy for people to just take it for granted," White said. "It's number one, a lot of work that she puts in; number two, it's been a rough go for her over the last 18 to 24 months; she's finding her way."

White showed solidarity for Clark, admitting that it has been a tough journey so far for the star, with all the limelight on her since her arrival in the WNBA. Last season, Clark played only 13 games due to her groin and quad injuries.

White also said that it is Clark's hard work that makes such moments possible.

"Sometimes we take generational talent for granted. What she did was incredible for us, and she’s going to have many more moments like that. I know she is, and we needed this one tonight."

White is adamant that Clark will keep performing like this. The 2024 No. 1 pick showed tenacity on Monday night, bagging 19 points, making five assists, and having three rebounds in the game.

Clark herself spoke about the moment.

Caitlin Clark's Reaction to Her Game-Winning Basket

Clark was certainly happy about the massive three-pointer she put in to help her team clutch a victory, with the Fever now holding a 6-5 record.

"Cotie [McMahon] almost got a fingertip on it," Clark said. "It kind of worked out perfectly that she went for the steal. Honestly, probably the most wide-open shot I had all night. My hands got a little clammy, but still went in, I guess."

Clark hit four three-pointers in the game, with 10 shots attempted. If Clark can improve her three-pointer percentage, which was 40 percent in this game, she can hit more crucial deciders moving forward.

The Fever are going to play against the Chicago Sky next on Thursday, June 11. The Sky holds a 4-7 record and stands 12th in the league standings for now.
