The conversation around the WNBA changed when Caitlin Clark entered the league. A new debate is dividing sports media over how much the WNBA still needs Caitlin Clark.
Emmanuel Acho sparked this controversy by arguing that the WNBA no longer needs Caitlin Clark at this stage of its growth. He claimed that the league has moved past the point where her presence is necessary for survival.
Dan Dakich addressed the situation during a recent episode of his show, Don't @ Me with Dan Dakich, on OutKick. Dakich noted, "This is legitimately the dumbest take you will ever hear about the WNBA." He used those words to describe the claim that the league no longer needs Clark to sustain its popularity and revenue growth.

A clip of the reaction from Dakich began circulating after an X user, Vince Langman, shared the footage online. Dakich explained his reasoning by breaking down the logic behind the statement.
Acho had acknowledged that Clark brought new attention to the league, but then argued the WNBA could now survive without her.
Dakich used a sarcastic counterargument to flip that point, saying that without Clark, the extra attention would disappear and the conversation would return to where it was before her arrival.
The discussion comes during a tense time for the league regarding player safety. Clark was involved in an on-court incident when Alyssa Thomas delivered a flagrant foul that led to a back injury for the star player.
The league then issued a one-game suspension to Thomas after a review, and teammate Sophie Cunningham said that opponents target Clark during every game. Dakich believes these physical incidents show why the league still relies on her popularity.
Dakich ended his point by stating that Clark remains the biggest driver of TV ratings, arena attendance, and media interest. This stands in direct contrast to how Acho views the current state of the WNBA.
Why Emmanuel Acho believes the WNBA no longer needs Caitlin Clark
Acho laid out his full argument on his talk show, and the clip shared by the Speakeasy X page shows his perspective. He stated that the WNBA would actually be better off without Caitlin Clark at this current juncture in time.
Acho explained that Clark has become more of a distraction than an additive factor for the sport. He pointed to the daily controversies, endless officiating debates, and arguments over special treatment.
In his view, the non-stop media attention around her creates unnecessary drama that takes away from the actual game. Acho also stated his belief that the league now possesses enough star talent to carry the torch forward.
He named incoming and rising stars like Paige Bueckers and Olivia Miles as players who can keep fan interest high.
Business data contradicts Acho's view. Games featuring Clark set all-time TV ratings records and boosted merchandise sales by margins.
Finance expert Ryan Brewer calculated that Clark generated 26.5% of all WNBA economic activity during her rookie season alone.
