Dave Portnoy defends Indiana Fever fans after Amber Cox’s statement

Indiana Fever GM Amber Cox stepped up for the fanbase after months of media scrutiny. Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy, a longtime Fever fan, was waiting for a speech like this.

Ever since Caitlin Clark joined the Fever, Portnoy has been a staunch supporter of the franchise. The Fever have become polarizing, and media narratives have repeatedly scrutinized their fanbase.

“This was a great and long overdue speech from Fever management. The bias against Fever fans is insane,” Portnoy wrote on X.

Cox’s exit interview resonated with Portnoy, as he showcased it through his X post. He has never shied away from supporting the Fever. Media narratives towards the Fever fandom have been a recurring headline.

The most recent controversy was the fan incident involving Aces star A’ja Wilson. The Fever management took the necessary measures, but the fandom was scrutinized as a whole again.

Cox has found no basis for that, time and again.

“The attacks on our fanbase have no basis in reality, and they need to stop, especially with members of the media,” Cox said. “I want to be really clear about that: There is a line, and people need to be held accountable if they cross it.”

Earlier this season, Fever fans backed Sophie Cunningham’s comments on trans athletes. Also, their endless backing of Caitlin Clark, at all times, has earned them criticism for toxicity.

Cox labelled it 'love' and also shed light on A’ja Wilson’s fan encounter.

The fans did nothing wrong: Cox

During Game 2 of the Fever's series against the Aces, Wilson got involved with a fan, which led to a heated situation. Cox revealed, however, that no Fever fan had broken the fan code of conduct over the season.

“We did not have one fan pointed out by a player who violated the WNBA code of conduct this season. Not one fan was removed from a game,” Cox said, per AP News' report. “Our fans love this team. They’re going to cheer, they’re going to boo.”

The statement underscored Cox's position that Fever fans had been unfairly blamed for isolated incidents.

Sitting beside the baseline, the fan shouted and pointed at Wilson, which left her enraged. The Aces star did the same, and soon after, the fan was moved to the back of the arena.

However, after a long period of review, it was deduced that the fan had not violated the Fan Code of Conduct. As a result, he returned to his seat without any action being taken.
