Dan Patrick calls out WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert for cancelling her appearance on his show

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert decided not to appear at a scheduled media appearance. Show producer Todd Fritz had spoken with the commissioner a few days earlier at a tournament event, where she agreed to the interview.

Dan Patrick made his comments on July 10, 2026, while broadcasting from the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament. He explained that his team waited almost 2 hours after the show ended, only in the hope that she would join them.

"If you want to be treated as a serious league, this is what happens! These are tough questions, but this is a fair outlet for you – a fair platform. I will treat you with respect," Patrick said.

A video was shared by the official X account of The Dan Patrick Show. According to him, the team was later informed by WNBA public relations staff that they preferred she not participate in the broadcast.

Patrick explained that his show had promoted the interview all day to its listeners. He questioned whether Engelbert had consulted with her PR staff before accepting the invitation.

He noted that the conversation would have been good for the WNBA because people are looking for clear answers.

Patrick planned to ask about on-court incidents involving rookie guard Caitlin Clark, officiating consistency, player safety, and upcoming expansion plans.

A few of the media reports indicated that Engelbert appeared in a separate interview with another media outlet that focused only on league expansion.

Why the cancelled interview mattered for the league

The debate started during a June 24, 2026, game between the Indiana Fever and the Phoenix Mercury. Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas made contact with her fist with Clark's throat area.

According to reports from ABC News, no foul was called by the referees during live play, but the league later upgraded the incident to a Flagrant Foul 2.

Apart from this, the 2026 season has seen many incidents involving Clark that went uncalled live. Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White showed her frustration publicly in the post-game conference.

The controversy extended past the basketball court into player safety outside the arena. Following her suspension, Thomas revealed that she and her family received online harassment.

Thomas criticized the league office for its silence and failure to protect players from external hate. Engelbert later stated that player well-being is the league's top priority and that security teams were working with the Mercury organization.

House Republican lawmakers sent an official letter to Engelbert and demanded answers regarding player protection by July 24, 2026. This political involvement has only increased the pressure on the league.
