Coco Gauff Labels Minor Accident a "Good Omen" Before French Open Win

Before stepping onto Court Philippe-Chatrier at Roland Garros, Coco Gauff got involved in a frightening car accident on her way to the match. Still, the 22-year-old did not seem too worried about it, and afterwards, joked that the situation only caused her to spill her juice. Later, she even called it a good omen.

“So we kind of got in like a mini car accident on my way to the site today. So there’s like this whole thing, and it’s supposed to go down. And then the police told [the driver] to go, and the pole was still there. So we ran into it, and it was kind of like, you know, you felt a little impact,” Coco Gauff told TNT Sports US after the match.

At first, Gauff did not seem too bothered by the situation. “I spilled my juice all over the car, and I was like, we can keep going.”

However, once she got out and looked at the damage, it became clear the car could not continue.

“The car was not drivable. So we ended up taking a taxi to Jean-Bouin Stadium, and then we took a tournament car to the tournament,” she explained.

Even after all of that, Gauff still managed to stay positive. Instead of getting stressed, she joked that the strange situation might actually have been a good sign.

“I feel like it’s a good omen. Maybe everything is happening in my first round. I was about to say, I mean, quite eventful.” She also admitted the chaos may have helped distract her from thinking too much about the match itself.

“Whenever that happens, it just lets you not think about the match too much. I’m just happy to be here,” Gauff added.

In the end, she handled the entire situation with a positive attitude. That same mindset also seemed to carry over into her performance later on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

Taylor Townsend Pushes Coco Gauff Early Before Collapse

Coco Gauff and Taylor Townsend are close friends off the court, but this was the first time they faced each other on the WTA Tour.

Once the match started, though, Gauff quickly took control. The world No. 4 needed only 1 hour and 20 minutes to defeat Townsend 6-4, 6-0 and begin her Roland Garros title defense in dominant fashion.

The win also extended Coco Gauff's perfect streak of reaching the second round in all seven of her appearances in Paris.

But when it comes to the match, even if the final score looked comfortable, it did not start easily for Gauff. Townsend broke her serve in the opening game and looked close to building a strong early lead.

Townsend, who previously defeated a 15-year-old Gauff in Charleston back in 2019, came out attacking aggressively once again. She even had a chance to move ahead 4-1 with a double-break lead.

However, Townsend narrowly missed a return on a break point after Gauff struggled with her first serve, allowing the defending champion to shift momentum back in her favor.

Now, with the victory secured, Gauff will move on to face Egyptian qualifier Mayar Sherif in the next round.

So, after this strong start, do you think Coco Gauff can defend her Roland Garros title?
