Coco Gauff Expresses Interest in Doubles Partnership With Serena Williams Following Victoria Mboko Setback

World No. 7 Coco Gauff publicly addressed her feelings for a dream doubles partnership with Serena Williams following the legend’s recent return from retirement. Williams initially returned to action in the HSBC Championship at Queen's Club as a wild card alongside Canadian Victoria Mboko, but a severe knee injury to Mboko forced an early exit.

During her pre-tournament interview at the Berlin Open, Gauff was asked about her most memorable moment with Williams. Gauff recalled being cast as a 10-year-old body double to portray a young version of Williams for a commercial shoot in Florida. When the conversation shifted to Williams' active wild-card comeback, Gauff didn't hesitate to pitch a modern-day doubles team.

"I would love to play on the same side as her, shooting my shot," Gauff said hysterically. "But I don't know, if she asks, the answer is gonna be yes, so yeah, I don't know."

Gauff said she wants to play with her idol and will be ready whenever Williams asks. She also stated that even a singles showdown on grass would fulfill a lifelong bucket-list goal.

"I'm hoping that one day she will hit up my line to play doubles. That would be really, really cool. And if she were to compete in singles, it would be cool to step on the court with her just because she's a legend and someone I look up to. And yeah, I'm very excited to be in the same spaces as her again."

Gauff, who was eliminated in the third round of the French Open in an upset loss against Anastasia Potapova, is set to play doubles in the Berlin Open alongside American Jessica Pegula against her French Open Eliminator and Russian star Diana Shnaider.

As Gauff has her eyes on the Berlin Open, Serena Williams has a few tasks ahead for her, too.

Serena Williams' Plans Ahead

The 23-time Grand Slam champion and Mboko won their opening round at the HSBC Championships. However, Mboko got injured in her left knee during her singles match against Karolina Pliskova.

Williams, however, was quick to choose her partner for the Berlin Open doubles, selecting World No. 10 Karolína Muchová.

The two will play against the pair of New Zealand's Erin Routliffe and Mexican Giuliana Olmos in the round of 16 of the Berlin Open on Tuesday, June 16.

Williams also expressed how she feels about playing in front of the German fans. She also answered whether we could see her play her first singles match since the 2022 US Open.

"Every tournament I add to my schedule right now feels special, and Berlin is no exception," Williams said. "I'm excited to compete in front of the German fans and continue building momentum throughout the grass-court season. I still have a little time to decide, and they have been great about giving me that space and time to decide."

Will we see Williams step onto the court at the biggest Grand Slam of the year, Wimbledon? Let us know your thoughts on that.
