Cheryl Miller Offers Harsh Reality Check to Indiana Fever as 2026 Season Comes to an End

Kelsey Mitchell, the Indiana Fever point guard, scored 1,086 points in a WNBA season record and compiled an incredible run of 27 consecutive 20-point games. Her free agency status is hanging like a cloud over a franchise that the Las Vegas Aces have knocked out 94-83 in Game 3.

Cheryl Miller, Hall of Famer and WNBA Showtime on Peacock analyst, wasted no time in sending a harsh reality check message to the Fever’s management.

"You better make that young lady happy. You better keep Kelsey Mitchell there. Otherwise, Indiana Fever, it's a wrap. It's a wrap for you if that young lady leaves," Miller said on WNBA Showtime.

Mitchell notched a career high of 24.7 points per game, came second only to Aces’ forward A'ja Wilson in terms of points, and ended up in the top five players vying for the MVP title.

In addition, Mitchell was also a vital player for the Fever team that reached the semifinals in 2025, despite Caitlin Clark missing the playoffs.

The urgency increases since Mitchell hasn't committed to coming back.

Mitchell has been under contract for the last two seasons on a super-max deal, whereas Aliyah Boston of the Fever has an epic extension that will take up approximately 20% of the salary cap from 2027. The potential extension of Clark will take up about 17%.

This debate about Mitchell is much more than just a panel conversation.

Indiana Fever Executive and ESPN Voice Underline Kelsey Mitchell's Market Value

Miller isn't alone in her opinion that Mitchell is the one holding the power, and the leadership of Indiana has said so already. The difficult thing here is to determine how loyalty compares to what other teams could offer this season.

"She has a lot of equity in this franchise and has put in a lot of time. Kelsey obviously has the opportunity and has earned the right to explore what other opportunities are out there, but our goal is for her to be a Fever girl for the rest of her career," Fever general manager Amber Cox said during exit interviews.

"This is an MVP candidate. And some teams would want to build around a franchise player like that," ESPN reporter Ramona Shelburne said while discussing Mitchell's market.

Her Game 3 effort shows what Indiana would lose. In the 94-83 playoff defeat, Mitchell scored a team-best 23 points, and the Fever hit just 9 out of 32 from beyond the arc.

Even the historically prolific Indiana offense was eighth in the defensive rating, so keeping Mitchell addresses only one part of Stephanie White's team-building challenge.
