Carlos Alcaraz and Serena Williams leave WTA fans stunned at the US Open

Serena Williams and Carlos Alcaraz gave tennis fans a moment that they will never forget at the 2026 US Open.

The two stars joined forces as a wildcard team in the mixed doubles event at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

In their first-round match, the duo left the spectators in awe by defeating established doubles specialists Erin Routliffe and Lloyd Glasspool in straight sets, 5-3, 4-1.

Despite an unlikely start where Alcaraz double-faulted on the very first point due to self-admitted nerves playing alongside Williams, the pairing quickly found their rhythm.

Williams and Alcaraz had already taken the first set 5–3 and were comfortably ahead 3–0, 15–15 in the second set when a legendary rally left every single person in the stadium completely starstruck.

Routliffe came in hard off a low serve straight to Williams’s side; Williams fired a return, Glasspool struck a low groundstroke back across the net that Alcaraz aggressively poached from the net straight off the opponent's court surface.

Glasspool and Routliffe pressed again, closing the net, until Williams — sprinting up from the baseline — lofted a high defensive lob clear deep into the corner.

Routliffe was forced to return, only to see her partner scramble and track down another deep ball, ending the rally and putting Williams and Alcaraz ahead 30–15.

The stadium erupted with the sequence. Popular Sports account SportsCenter posted the video of the event on X, writing:

"UNBELIEVABLE POINT. Carlos Alcaraz and Serena Williams put on a show ."

Beyond the stadium, the internet was left completely speechless

It was not just the fans inside Arthur Ashe Stadium who were left wide-eyed by what they saw.

One fan noted the excitement, writing on X, "W**, that match was a vibe. Alcaraz + Serena? LMAO, tennis."

The first reaction, almost universally, was disbelief that this was even happening.

For Williams, it was an emotional return to Flushing Meadows. She had not played at the US Open since her farewell there in 2022. For Alcaraz, it was his first competitive match since April after a right wrist injury kept him out for about four months.

However, as soon as the balls started flying across the net, the conversation shifted from surprise to a high level of play and athleticism.

"The athleticism, the touch, the smiles at the end. Tennis doesn’t get better than this," added one fan.

What fans fell in love with most was the genuine joy both players showed on the court together.

One fan noted, writing, "Two generations of greatness sharing the court! The energy and pure entertainment were unreal."

Grouping superstar singles players together does not always produce great doubles. Back in 2011, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray joined forces in Miami only to lose in the very first round to Sergiy Stakhovsky and Mikhail Youzhny.

Even Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, playing together in Federer’s final professional match at the 2022 Laver Cup, lost their doubles tie to Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe.

But in Williams and Alcaraz's dream, the on-court chemistry clicked right away. At least fans think so.

"They are having fun, and it shows!" said one fan, while another repeated the same, writing, "That was INSANE! Alcaraz and Serena put on an absolute SHOW! "
