While Caitlin Clark’s amazing season is making quite a firm case for the MVP position, her former Indiana Fever teammate Sydney Colson had a different name in mind.
“My MVP? I think A’Ja (Wilson),” Colson said during a recent appearance on Yahoo Sports with Jason Fitz and Caroline Fenton. “I was her teammate in 2019… I didn't think she would be knocking down the three ball as consistently this year.”
In her 11-season tenure, Colson spent 4 with Wilson in the Las Vegas Aces, saw her collect 4 MVPs, 3 DPOYs, 2 Finals MVPs, and 3 Rings. The fact that she still leads the league in scoring (26.0 PPG), blocks (2.0) and ranks 3rd in rebounds (9.5) at 30 is a marvel on its own.

However, Colson has also spent the last season with Clark in Indianapolis. The 24-year-old All-Time NCAA leading scorer has surpassed (1,343) Wilson (1,250) for most points in the first 70 W career games. She ranks 3rd in scoring (22.1 PPG), 1st in assists (8.3), and 5th in 3Ps (2.9) this season.
But none of it was enough for Colson, who is quite literally in awe of Wilson’s overall impact.
“I didn't think she would add so much to her game every offseason,” Colson added to the same conversation. “I think she's definitely one of those (Mount Rushmore WNBA players of all time) for me.”
However, she does believe Clark is on the right track to win an MVP award in future.
Sydney Colson Sees Caitlin Clark's Potential as a Future MVP
Drawing a record audience, skyrocketing ticket sales, a broadcasting surge, and popularizing women’s basketball to this degree, Clark’s arrival was surely like a cultural reset. While Colson isn’t ready to crown the Fever guard as MVP just yet, she’s sure Clark will get there someday.
“Fortunately, we have a lot of talented guards that are in the running,” she added to the same segment. “Whether it's Kelsey (Mitchell), CC, or probably Olivia Miles is going to get one soon. There are a lot of other guards who are going to get it for several years as well.”
But what sets Wilson apart is that she’s “still doing it right now.” And Clark, on the other hand, has yet to climb some steps to get on that level.
