Caitlin Clark’s Angel Reese mention adds a new twist to the Fever extension debate

Caitlin Clark has added a new angle to the debate about her future contract with the Indiana Fever. The young star wants to win titles, but her latest comments have also brought Angel Reese into the discussion.

During her exit interview, Clark spoke about the WNBA’s Exceptional Performance on Initial Contract (EPIC) rule. This rule could help young players get better contracts. However, Clark also wants the Fever to build a strong team that can win championships. She also discussed how Reese could benefit from the new rule.

“Obviously it's a really cool opportunity. I think it's something that's great that was added to the CBA to kind of reward young players that are on their rookie deals,” Caitlin Clark said. “I think now Angel will be able to get on her onto her epic as well. Obviously, we saw AB get onto her epic, and then Paige will be able to the following year, I believe.”

She said during her exit interview, and the video was shared by the Fever’s official YouTube channel.

Clark discussed Reese’s chance to benefit from the new EPIC rule while stressing that winning championships remains her main goal with Indiana.

For her, however, the main question is how the Fever can build the best possible team.

She added, “So, just something that's really cool. I think it, you know, shows respect to the to the young players that are really talented in our league and I just think for myself it's more a decision of how we can best construct a roster and what's going to be best for our team to help us win championships.”

Clark is thinking beyond her contract. She wants the Fever to build a title-winning team, which also links Reese to her extension debate.

Caitlin Clark puts Fever's championship goals ahead of contract decision

Clark’s exit interview also showed why her contract is not her main focus. She values the new rule but wants to win first. When asked about signing an extension, she again stressed that winning remains her top priority.

Caitlin Clark said, “Yeah, I think it's like I think for myself I like my focus is on winning. I mean, you know, I certainly know what I deserve and what I'm worth, but at the same time like sometimes you have to make sacrifices and I'm not saying I'm not going to sign it.”

Clark has not decided whether to sign an extension. She wants to understand the Fever’s plans first. She also said that she has not started contract talks and has spent little time thinking about her deal during her break.

Clark said, “We I haven't got into those discussions. I haven't even honestly given it much thought. I've been playing 18 holes every single day.”

She also plans to discuss her contract with Fever officials and owners to decide the team’s future needs.

She said, “So, I think those are just conversations that I'll have with, you know, the front office and then ownership about, you know, where we want to go and and what we need and you know, what sacrifices have to be made or not made or who we can pay or who needs this or who needs that.”

The Fever must balance player salaries with building a title-winning team. So, Clark’s decision may depend on the team’s plans too.

Clark’s comments about Reese have added a new angle to the contract debate. She supports young stars getting better deals, but her own decision depends on the Fever’s plans and their goal of winning championships.
