Caitlin Clark is taking a proactive approach with WNBA officials as she navigates the final stretch of the regular season with a league-high technical foul total hanging over her head.

The Indiana Fever star revealed she's been meeting with referees before every game to keep communication open and avoid an eighth technical foul.

"I feel like the refs might also know I have seven technical fouls, so I always try to warn them, like, 'I'm working with you, I'm working with you, like, let's have a conversation,'" Clark told reporters. "I think it's made my conversations with them more positive and more conversational in both ways for them and for me."

Clark has carried seven technicals since July 22, and with only a handful of games left in the regular season, she's clearly tracking the numbers closely. An eighth technical before the playoffs would cost her a game, though the count resets once the postseason begins.

"I mean, I really only have three more games to go, because [if] the fourth game starts [and] I get a technical, I'm not kicked out of the game, and then it resets for the playoffs," Clark explained, as published by the New York Post. "So, I'm really proud of myself, but still three games to go."

Clark's technical foul total has followed her throughout 2026. She is known for her competitiveness and willingness to voice frustration with officials over non-calls or physical play. And those moments have occasionally tipped into technical fouls, putting her closer to a suspension than anyone else in the league.

The decision to talk with referees before tip-off marks a real shift toward damage control. Rather than waiting for tension to build mid-game, Clark is trying to establish open communication upfront.

Why Clark’s presence matters for Indiana

The timing carries real weight for the Fever. Indiana sits in the middle of a tight playoff race, with just a few games separating several teams in the standings.

The team is positioned to make the playoffs but is still jockeying for seeding, and losing Clark for even one regular-season game could disrupt both momentum and positioning.

Clark has been central to Indiana's offense all season, averaging more than 22 points per game, as per StatMuse, and leading the league in assists for much of the year. Keeping her on the floor is viewed as essential heading into the postseason push, which is exactly why she's taking this pregame approach so seriously.

Whether these pregame conversations fully prevent another technical remains to be seen. What's clear is that Clark isn't leaving it to chance anymore. With the regular season winding down and the playoffs on the horizon, she's doing everything she can to stay available.
