Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White talks with Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark (22) on Saturday, May 2, 2026, during the first half of a preseason game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
In a tense game between the Indiana Fever and the Chicago Sky on June 11, Fever head coach Stephanie White and Caitlin Clark both received technical fouls. Indiana won the game 114-106, and Clark recalled the instance after White was given a technical foul.
The game saw Clark get a technical after she reacted to a referee's no-call by punching the air in the referee's direction. Meanwhile, White got a technical in the third quarter as well after an emotional outburst. Clark recalled the four words White said.
"Mine was definitely deserved, but I wanted it because then, after that, I mean, I got to the free-throw line more," Clark said. "(White) said, 'The ref was soft.' She said she thought she didn't deserve it."
Clark said she was pumped up after White got a technical as well, saying that it motivates the team to fight in the game. White also later clarified her words.
"I thought the tech was soft ... it's an intense game and I thought it was inconsistent... I didn't think I deserved the tech, but I got it anyway."
White's foul came with 4:56 left in the third quarter. Aliyah Boston was called for an offensive foul, and White protested the call against the referees, causing her to receive a technical.
It was also Clark's third technical foul of the season.
As per the WNBA's disciplinary structure, players get fined $500 for each of the first three technical fouls. This means that Clark has now been fined a total of $1,500. She would now be fined $ 1,000 each of the first seven future technical fouls.
But the win against the Sky proved crucial for Indiana's overall record.
The Fever and Caitlin Clark: Technical Fouls, Historic Milestone
While White and Clark both got technical fouls, it was yet another win for the Fever, improving their record to 7-5 and keeping them in the title-contender mix.
Indiana is now on a two-game winning streak.
Furthermore, Clark and 2023 Rookie of the Year Aliyah Boston became the first teammates to have a 30-point double-double in the same game in WNBA history. Boston scored a game-high 34 points with 12 assists, whereas Clark scored 32 points with 10 assists.
Indiana currently stands sixth in the league standings and third in the Eastern Conference standings. They have one of the best offenses right now, averaging 90.3 points per game.
The Fever will play the Connecticut Sun next on Saturday, June 13.
The Sun have had the worst start to the season so far, standing last in both the league and the Eastern Conference standings. They currently have a 2-8 record and are on a four-game losing streak.
The Fever will surely look to continue this new form after fumbling a few games due to their defense, as they have allowed 87.3 points per game so far.
Do you think Caitlin Clark can overcome these technical foul calls to lead the Fever to another victory on Saturday? Let us know in the comments.
