Caitlin Clark kicks off offseason with heartwarming gesture for fans at college event

Just days after the Indiana Fever's first-round playoff exit, Caitlin Clark returned to Iowa City and gave fans a memorable start to her offseason.

Appearing as the celebrity guest picker on ESPN's College GameDay ahead of Iowa's matchup against Ohio State, the former Hawkeye star tossed signed pairs of her brand-new Nike Caitlin 1 sneakers into the crowd.

The moment, shared on video by @SoleRetriever on X, showed Clark smiling as she launched the shoes toward the packed audience gathered for the pregame show.

The sneakers carried her signature, instantly turning them into prized keepsakes for the fans who caught them, a light, generous gesture that stood in sharp contrast to the disappointment of the Fever's 2-1 series loss to the Las Vegas Aces earlier in the week.

Her appearance on College GameDay marked a full-circle moment, bringing her back to where her stardom first took off. Clark remains one of Iowa's most beloved figures, and the crowd responded with the usual mix of cheers and playful boos as she made her picks. Even so, she still carved out time for the fan-friendly moment with the shoes.

Clark had delivered a historic performance in Game 2 of that series, becoming the first player in WNBA history to record 25 points and 15 assists in a playoff game. She finished with 27 points, 15 assists, and seven rebounds in a 99-89 win that forced a decisive Game 3.

In the finale, though, she was held to 18 points as A'ja Wilson led Las Vegas to a 94-83 victory. The season ended there, but Clark wasted little time shifting her focus elsewhere.

A record-breaking shoe launch

The Caitlin 1 had launched just two days earlier, on October 1. Nike CEO Elliott Hill described it as the biggest women's signature shoe launch in company history. The model was placed in roughly 5,000 stores, about twice the average distribution for a Nike basketball signature shoe, as per Polymarket Hoops on X.

Both initial colorways, Caitlin Blue and Warning Code, sold out quickly online and at many retailers, with resale prices climbing well above the $140 retail price shortly after launch.

The combination of the record-setting commercial debut and Clark's immediate willingness to give away signed pairs created a compelling early offseason story. While Indiana's postseason run ended earlier than hoped, the sneaker launch and the College GameDay appearance together reinforced just how far Clark's influence extends beyond the court.

Do you think moments like this strengthen Clark's long-term bond with fans more than her on-court achievements do?
