Caitlin Clark gives brutal grade to Fever's performance in Round 1 loss to Aces

A one-word answer after a lopsided playoff opener said everything about where Indiana's head was after Sunday night.

Asked how she would grade the team's defensive effort in forcing Las Vegas into tough shots during Game 1, Caitlin Clark didn't hesitate.

"An F," she said.

The response, as published by Underdog WNBA, captured the frustration of a 102-85 defeat that left the sixth-seeded Fever trailing the third-seeded Aces 1-0 in their best-of-three first-round series.

A'ja Wilson dominated from the opening tip. The reigning MVP finished with a career playoff-high 38 points on 15-of-19 shooting, added 16 rebounds, and blocked four shots. Jackie Young contributed 21 points and 10 assists, while Chelsea Gray added 14 points and eight assists.

Las Vegas shot 59 percent from the field and 47 percent from three, building a lead as large as 27 points and never looking back after a decisive 29-13 run over the final seven minutes of the second quarter.

Indiana's offense struggled to match that pace. Clark posted a double-double with 15 points and 10 assists but shot just 6-of-17 from the field, including 3-of-10 from deep.

Kelsey Mitchell, so dependable during the regular season, managed only 12 points on 4-of-16 shooting. Aliyah Boston led the Fever with 18 points and eight rebounds while dealing with a lower-leg injury. Sophie Cunningham and Raven Johnson provided a spark off the bench with 13 and 14 points, respectively, but it wasn't enough.

Clark's blunt assessment reflected more than a single off game. The Fever entered the postseason with uneven momentum after a difficult stretch, and the gap in execution against a top contender was clear. Clark has rarely softened her evaluations of her team's play, and the "F" fit the pattern of a competitor unwilling to accept mediocrity in high-stakes moments.

Defensive issues resurface for Fever

Problems that lingered all season came back at the worst possible moment, and this time they were on full display for a national audience.

The Indiana Fever finished the regular season near the bottom of the league in points allowed and ranked eighth in defensive rating. That reflected a unit that could compete in stretches but struggled with consistency against elite offenses.

In Game 1 against the Las Vegas Aces, a championship-tested group built around A'ja Wilson, Jackie Young, and Chelsea Gray, those shortcomings became glaring.

Las Vegas scored 28 points off 17 Indiana turnovers and found open looks in the half-court all night, as per Las Vegas Review Journal. The Aces shot 59% overall and 47% from three. Wilson alone finished with 38 points on 15-of-19 shooting, adding 16 rebounds and four blocks, as Las Vegas built a lead as large as 27.

Caitlin Clark's blunt "F" for the defensive effort captured the frustration. With Game 2 in Indianapolis next, the Fever must tighten up, protect the ball, and force tougher shots to extend the series.

Do you think the Fever can fix their defensive issues in time to force a Game 3?
