Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White talks with Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark (22) on Saturday, May 2, 2026, during the first half of a preseason game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Caitlin Clark Drops Blunt Verdict on Her Sidelined Back After Indiana Fever Chaos

Caitlin Clark is brushing off concerns about a nagging back injury. The Indiana Fever star issued a blunt verdict on her health following a WNBA investigation into the team's reporting practices.

As great as Clark has been since she arrived in the league, injuries have become a worrying part of her career. She played her entire college basketball career practically without injury, but last season she played only 13 games due to multiple injuries, including two groin injuries that ended her season. Now, the Fever star is dealing with a back injury.

“I don't think it necessarily started at a certain point,” Clark told reporters. “I think it's just been over the course of the last year when I've kind of been understanding my body more. Before that, it's always like, ‘I'm fine, I'm fine,’ like ‘go play, go play, go play.’”

Clark has developed a better understanding of her physical limits. She didn’t flag it as something concerning.

“And maybe sometimes I'm a little too hyper-aware about certain things, but at the same time, that's good. Like, I understand things, and just continuing to work through that. And yeah, I think it's just finding the balance of when I maybe don't need to be as aware and when I'm maybe a little too over-aware. So, still working through that, but I don't think it's anything else. No,” she added.

Last week, the Fever became the center of controversy after notice from the league.

The team received a warning from the WNBA regarding Clark’s injury report. While the league requires teams to submit injury reports by 5 pm local time on the day before the game, Indiana had put Clark on the injury report just two hours before the Fire game.

According to the reports, the Fever didn’t mention that Clark had failed to practice the previous day. Head coach Stephanie White said that Clark wasn’t on the injury report because they expected Clark to play in the Fire game.

Caitlin Clark is having a comeback season despite injury concerns

Last season was disappointing both for Clark and the Indiana Fever. The last picture fans had of Clark from the last season was of a superstar full of tears at TD Garden against the Connecticut Sun after injuring her groin for the second time.

Despite persistent injury concerns, Clark is having a season for herself and proving why she was the No. 1 pick in 2024.

This season, the Fever star is averaging career-highs in both points and assists in far fewer minutes than her rookie season. She is also shooting a career-best from the field, including the 3-point line.

She is averaging 23.8 points, 4.0 rebounds, 9.0 assists and a block in 31 minutes. Meantime she is shooting 43.2% from the field and 34.8% from three-point range.

Clark is third among the top scorers in the league this season and leads the league in assists for the second time in three years. She is one of the top players in the league in almost every offensive category. She still has a long season to prove why she is one of the best in the league.
