Indiana Fever superstar Caitlin Clark continues to set new standards every time she steps onto the basketball court. Clark was nearing another WNBA record when she entered Chase Center on Thursday May 28, to face the Golden State Valkyries. It took her two quarters to achieve it.
Before the Valkyries' game, Clark had a total of 1,102 points and 497 assists. She was just three assists away from becoming the fastest player in WNBA history to reach the 1000 points & 500 assists mark.
23 years later, on Thursday, Clark claimed the record in the second quarter of the Valkyries game. She had three quick assists to break Bird’s record. With four minutes remaining before halftime, Clark threw an assist to Sophie Cunningham for a running layup.
This record was previosly held by Seattle Storm legend Sue Bird since 2003. How quickly Clark has reached the mark captures what makes her THE player to watch.
Bird achieved the mark in 82 games, but the Indiana Fever star took only 59 games to reach the mark. That’s 23 games less!
This is the same gap between Bird and Cynthia Cooper, who was sixth on the list with 105 games, before Clark took the top spot.
With Clark taking the top spot, Sabrina Ionescu (84 games), Dawn Staley (101 games) and Danielle Robinson (102 games) take the third, fourth and fifth spots.
Caitlin Clark is Having Her Best Season After a Disappointing 2025
Last season, on July 15, the WNBA world was heartbroken for Caitlin Clark.
The Fever star, was in tears at TD Garden as she hobbled off the court in a game against the Connecticut Sun after injuring her groin for the second time in the 2025 season. She was limited to just 13 games after a historic rookie year.
This season, Clark has made a comeback, and she is proving that the surrounding hype wasn’t an illusion.
In five games this season, she is already averaging career-highs in points, assists and blocks despite having her minutes declined by over five minutes compared to her rookie season.
Clark is averaging 23.8 points, 4.4 rebounds, 9.0 assists, 1.0 steals and 1.0 blocks per game.
She is among the top five leading scorers and leads the league in assists this season. Although she hasn’t been her best making baskets, she is still shooting at her career-best at 43.2% from the field and 34.8% from the 3-point line.
Clark continues to improve as she gets more accustomed to the WNBA and its physical demands.
