Brittney Griner Makes Surprising Admission About Joining the Connecticut Sun

Veteran Brittney Griner has had a great career in the WNBA, playing with the Phoenix Mercury for 11 years, then joining the Atlanta Dream in 2025, and finally landing with the Connecticut Sun this season. Griner has opened up about her decision to join the Sun despite saying that no one wants to go to Connecticut.

Before the Sun game against the Toronto Tempo, which the Sun lost 101-97, Griner showed up as a guest on WNBA legend Sue Bird's YouTube channel. She talked about what made her join Connecticut.

"Like, I'll throw it out there. No one you know wants to go to Connecticut, but I was just like, I wasn't looking at it like where I would be. I was looking at the opportunity, you know, what I'd be able to do being with a younger team, being a vet. Um, you know, it's no surprise that they're going to Houston. And I haven't played in Houston in forever and you know that's appeasing to me."

Despite mentioning that no one wants to join the Sun, Griner wanted to take the chance as an opportunity to guide the youngsters and be the voice of the team.

The WNBA champion was raised in Houston, and the Sun is relocating to Houston after this season. This move comes after Houston Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta bought it for $300 million in March 2026. Griner saw this opportunity to live close to her hometown.

Although the relocation is next year, she said that she came this year to learn the system, get to know the people here, and make herself comfortable in the environment.

Although the nine-time All-Star has been one of the most influential WNBA players in history, she had her own major setback in 2022.

Brittney Griner’s Story in Wnba So Far

Griner joined the Mercury as the 2013 No. 1 draft pick and won a WNBA title in 2014 with the team. Throughout the years, she came to be known as one of the fiercest players in the league.

After such a major setback in 2022 when she was sentenced for 10 months, she came back to the WNBA. After that, she averaged 17.5 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game in the 2023 season.

She went on to play another season in the Mercury before leaving for the Dream and finally the Sun.

Griner has shown her veteranship in the Sun as well, averaging 11.6 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game. She became the just the 18th player in WNBA history to score 6,000 career points on May 30, against the Los Angeles Sparks.

Additionally, the Sun have been one of the worst teams this season, having a 2-15 record. They will hope to grab a win against the Chicago Sky on Monday, June 22.
