May 22, 2025; Atlanta, Georgia, USA; Atlanta Dream center Brittney Griner (42) shoots against the Indiana Fever in the first quarter at State Farm Arena.
In a battle of high-profile post play, Connecticut Sun forward Brittney Griner will be opening her wallet following a heavy foul on Atlanta Dream forward Angel Reese.
The Dream comfortably overcame the Sun 91-75 in the Commissioner's Cup, but the game's highlight occurred late in the fourth quarter following a tussle between Griner and Reese.
With 7:43 left in the fourth quarter, Griner and Reese battled for a rebound as Griner's arm caught Reese across the neck, sending her hard to the floor. Griner will now have to pay a fine of $500 as officials called a Flagrant 1 foul on her upon review.
While the fall was hard, the good news is that there were no hard feelings between Griner and Reese, as the former immediately rushed down to help Reese get back on her feet. Reese was unharmed during the play.
Regardless, Reese and the Dream had the upper hand in the game as her fine form in Atlanta continues.
The two-time All-Star once again excelled, finishing the game with a double-double. Reese recorded a 12-point, 13-rebound double-double to back Rhyne Howard and Allisha Gray’s 62 combined points.
Meanwhile, Griner had an off game, finishing with 7 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists. It was a bittersweet moment for Griner, who could not get a win upon her return to Atlanta.
Despite the Flagrant incident, Griner and Reese have been cool with each other and were about to be each other's teammates as well.
Brittney Griner and Angel Reese were Almost Teammates
Griner spent last season with the Atlanta Dream, and the ten-time All-Star averaged 9.8 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks in 39 games.
As we all know, Reese joined the Atlanta Dream by way of a trade with the Chicago Sky. Griner was still with the Dream till then, and even welcomed Reese to her new team.
However, we never actually got to see the star-powered frontcourt actually materialize, as shortly after Reese's joining, Griner opted to take her talents to the Connecticut Sun.
The move comes just before the team relocates to Houston, where Griner was born and raised.
With no hard feelings between the two stars, they will continue to lead their respective teams with the aim of reaching the playoffs.
The Connecticut Sun will visit Reese's former team, the Chicago Sky, the day after Angel Reese takes on Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever on Thursday, in what is expected to be one of the games with the highest viewership record.
