Breanna Stewart Rewrites WNBA Record Books in Liberty Victory vs. Mystics

It was another brilliant performance by the New York Liberty as they won their fifth WNBA Commissioner’s Cup game in a row, beating the Washington Mystics 86-64 on June 14. Liberty star Breanna Stewart added a few feathers to her cap in the process as well.

Stewart was on fire, as she scored 11 points, had 10 rebounds, and made five blocks in the first 20 minutes of the game. These stats have made her only the second player in WNBA history to have at least 10 points, 10 rebounds, and five blocks in a half.

The record was previously held by nine-time All-Star Brittney Griner. Furthermore, she also made her 100th double-double of her career, per a June 14 post on X by Just Women's Sports.

But the stats train doesn't stop there. She also surpassed WNBA legend Lisa Leslie on the WNBA's all-time scoring list, taking her place at the 13th spot, with 6,264 career points.

The Liberty also qualified for the final of the Commissioner's Cup, marking their third time in four years to feature in it, with Stewart at the head of it all.

Defensively, Stewart was equally dominant

She made her WNBA career-high seven blocks in the game. In total, she scored 14 points, had 12 rebounds, one assist, and seven blocks in the game.

Stewart has also crossed Becky Hammon's previous record of 2,367 points, and is now also the fifth-highest scorer ever for the Liberty with 2,527. She crossed Hammon on May 21 when the Liberty lost 70-87 to the Golden State Valkyries.

Despite the earlier loss, Stewart is in top form, leading the Liberty to third in the league standings.

Breanna Stewart and The Liberty Are Dominating

The two-time WNBA MVP's 20.4 ppg this season ranks her among the league's top scorers. She also added 8.8 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game this season. She is playing decently on defense as well, averaging 1.5 steals and 0.9 blocks per game.

After what looked like a bad start for the Liberty, being 3-4, they have now won seven consecutive games, improving their record to 10-4. They have been defensively stout as well, with a defensive rating of 101.1 and ranking second in the league.

Additionally, they allow an average of 82.4 points per game, fourth-best in the league. They also rank fourth in the league for rebounds and assists per game, with 35.9 rebounds and 21.1 assists per game.

They now rank first in the Eastern Conference standings and third in the league standings. The Liberty will play their next game against a crumbling Chicago Sky, who hold a 4-9 record. The game will take place at Wintrust Arena on Wednesday, June 17.

The Liberty continues to dominate, but will the Sky be able to stop this streak? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
