Azzi Fudd Opens Up on Building Instant Chemistry With Paige Bueckers

The on-court connection between Azzi Fudd and Paige Bueckers was already known and highly acknowledged since their days together in the UConn Huskies.

While the WNBA is a different ball game altogether, Fudd revealed on Sunday after practice the attributes of why her chemistry with Bueckers is still top-notch.

“She has one of the best court visions of anyone you’ll ever meet… She knows where I’m going to be before I even get there. So to have someone who can one-pass the ball so incredibly well, but also someone who could know who is going to be where, read the defense super well…” Fudd said.

Fudd's relationship with Bueckers is one of the most talked-about aspects of her professional career. The duo won the NCAA championship at UConn under head coach Geno Auriemma.

After Bueckers left for the WNBA as the No. 1 overall pick, Fudd spent another year with the Huskies until their careers aligned once again, as by chance of the WNBA Draft lottery, Fudd was also selected as the No. 1 overall pick this year by the Dallas Wings.

The Wings have been solid this season under new head coach Jose Fernandez with a record of 7-3. After a rough individual start for Fudd, the top draft pick is slowly but surely attaining more confidence.

When asked about the role she thinks she will have with the team’s offense, Fudd spoke about the possibility of becoming the team’s primary ball handler going forward.

While she relishes the opportunity to have a bigger role, Fudd doesn’t worry about how the team will work out the handling of the responsibility in the end.

“I think our team is so dynamic and versatile that we will figure it out,” Fudd said.

Even as the first overall pick, Fudd admitted that it took her some time getting used to the fact that she was playing in the WNBA.

It Took Azzi Fudd Some Time Adjusting to the WNBA

The WNBA has never been more popular, and that spotlight can even be daring for the best of the best coming out of college. According to Fudd, it took some six games for her to process that she was playing in the WNBA.

Fudd said she finally felt calm when the Dallas Wings played at the New York Liberty on May 24.

“I think in New York, was the first time that (the game) slowed down (for me) a little,” Fudd disclosed about getting used to the league. “I definitely felt more calm, more confident. Yeah, but I think each game has slowed down a little bit more and felt a little bit more comfortable.”

Fudd also credited her teammates for making her feel at home, and is now getting into the groove on the court with double-digit box score numbers.

Fudd and the Wings now have a good opportunity to add to their momentum in the ongoing Commissioner's Cup, as they next face a heavyweight in the form of No. 2 overall pick Olivia Miles' Minnesota Lynx on Tuesday.

So, who do you think will come out on top between the top two rookies of the year? Let us know in the comments.
