With the regular season concluding on September 24, there’s still some time left for the MVP talks. But author Christine Brennan is ready to make her case for Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark right away.
“As someone who has covered the NFL, CFB, Olympics, etc., for years, I’ve never spent much time thinking about MVP or other awards this far from season’s end,” she posted on X on August 20, 2026. “That said, if asked right now, it’s undeniable: Caitlin Clark is in the top 2 or 3 for MVP.”
Amidst the ongoing “MVP chatter,” many would pick the 4x reigning MVP and the league’s leading scorer, A’Ja Wilson (26.1 PPG), or the 2nd-leading scorer, Clark’s Fever teammate Kelsey Mitchell (24.3 PPG). But Clark is doing more than what the stats show.
The 24-year-old is the third-leading scorer (22.1 PPG), is leading the league in assists (8.3) and also ranks 6th in 3Ps made (2.8). While veterans like Wilson or Mitchell are indeed offensive powerhouses, Clark dominates both in offensive production and playmaking.
That’s how an elite offensive guard functions. In 7 games played this August, Clark recorded a double-double in scoring and assists 4 times, for a total of 11 times this season so far. She (21.5%) also surpasses Mitchell (18.9%) in efficiency rating.
But Brennan’s praise for Clark wouldn’t really conclude with just an MVP award.
Christine Brennan’s Case for Caitlin Clark Goes Beyond MVP
If she hasn’t written enough in her book, “On Her Game: Caitlin Clark and the Revolution in Women’s Sports,” Brennan has repeatedly talked about how Clark impacts the WNBA and has been a generational talent.
“She (Clark) is part of a cultural revolution,” the author said during an interview with WHO 13 Sports Director Keith Murphy. “I never expected to see a woman be this big of a superstar while I was still in my career.”
Per Brennan, Clark is “the most consequential female athlete we have seen in generations.” An MVP award is not really a parameter to grasp her entirely. But it’s still a token of acknowledgement that, per Brennan, Clark is well deserving of.
