World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka is taking time to recover after a shocking quarterfinal defeat at the French Open. The top seed was upset by 23rd-seeded Russian Diana Shnaider, who rallied to win 3-6, 7-5, 6-0.
Following the loss, Sabalenka has posted on social media, saying she is looking to "reset" after her loss. She was seen enjoying some downtime with her dog, applying face masks, and relaxing.
"Time to reset 🧘🏼♀️🛁❤️," she wrote in the caption.
There is also a short letter from Le Royal Monceau stating, "The next chapter starts with recovery!"
Sabalenka had entered the tournament as one of the favorites to lift the title. However, after leading 5-3 in the second set, she lost momentum as Shnaider stormed back, winning 10 consecutive games.
Sabalenka looks to recover and return to playing, although in her post-match interview after the loss, she said she wanted to quit tennis.
"No thoughts, no emotions," Sabalenka said. "Just want to quit tennis right now. … What doesn’t kill you makes you strong. At some point, I will have to figure this out. I wanna go to one of those rooms, go in, and smash everything. Probably I will spend a whole day tomorrow. Maybe it will help, maybe not."
Although she later posted on Instagram that she would be back and was definitely not quitting. Sabalenka missed another chance to win her maiden French Open title after losing the final against World No. 4 Coco Gauff 7-6, 2-6, 4-6 last year.
On both of these occasions, she had trouble facing the gusty wind in Paris, which reached 26mph in her match against Shnaider. But the World No. 1 now looks to leave her past behind and focus on the next chapter in her career.
What's Next For Aryna Sabalenka
Sabalenka has won the Australian Open and the US Open twice each. However, she is still chasing her first Wimbledon crown, as well as a maiden French Open title.
Sabalenka has not yet won on a grass court, and with the next Grand Slam title being Wimbledon, she will definitely be seeking it. The four-time Grand Slam champion has come close to winning the Wimbledon title, playing three semi-finals in 2021, 2023, and 2025.
Sabalenka has come back from adversity before, losing in two finals and a semi-final of the first three Grand Slams, then winning the 2025 US Open against Amanda Anisimova, 6-3, 7-6.
This year, she lost in the final of the Australian Open to Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina 4-6, 6-4, 4-6. With a quarter-final defeat at the French Open, Sabalenka has a chance to yet again redeem herself in the biggest Grand Slam tournament of the year. What do you think about the same?
