In a surprising turn of events, the Los Angeles Sparks announced the departure of GM Raegan Pebley with very little fanfare or explanation, as analyst Annie Costabile revealed the reality of the Sparks front office.
In the latest episode of No Offseason: The Athletic's Women's Basketball Show, Costabile explained the murmurs told by multiple sources that Raegan was already anticipating such an outcome even before the Sparks announced the news.
"They did this three weeks before the trade deadline, and what I was told by multiple sources is like Raegan's already been on the phone in anticipation of the trade deadline. So it's curious why they wouldn't let her execute through the end of the year." Costabile said.

After a 21-year head coaching career split between Utah State, Fresno State, and TCU, Pebley was hired by the Sparks on January 5, 2024. The Sparks posted an 8-32 record with Pebley in 2024, a 21-23 mark in 2025 and a 10-12 record this season.
Pebley was responsible for hiring Lynne Roberts as head coach, while also playing a role in the signing of star player Kelsey Plum ahead of the 2025 season.
In addition, she was one of the key voices in bringing Nneka Ogwumike to the Crypto.com Arena while steering the signing of Cameron Brink in the 2024 WNBA Draft.
While it has been a turbulent road and general managers carry most of the load, it would be unfair to put the problems the team's facing solely at her feet.
Meanwhile, Roberts would rather focus on the road ahead than on what is not in her control.
Lynne Roberts Gives Her Thoughts on Raegan Pebley's Departure
The Sparks head coach revealed that she found out about Pebley leaving on Sunday morning.
"I'm focused on the players and the coaching and the team," Roberts said. "Raegan's a friend of mine, and I care about her. And this is the hard part in sports, right? But right now, I'm just focused on the team."
While the Sparks are not having their best season, it is not because they have been playing badly.
The team has battled through the year as players rotate through injuries. Ogwumike and Brink both missed time on the floor (and Brink missed the entire 2024 season essentially after tearing her ACL). Plum is out with her own injury and may not return until the All-Star Game.
The Sparks have not made the playoffs in the last five seasons, and it seems unlikely things will change this time around. So maybe the decision for Pebley's exit was needed after all.
So, do you think Raegan Pebley's departure was the correct decision for the Los Angeles Sparks' front office? Let us know in the comments.
